ACR President Proposes Win-Win Solution to Foreclosure Crisis
Writing in the op-ed section of the January 29th edition of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, ACR President Marilyn McKnight, co-authoring with Stephen Erickson, proposed mediated settlements for troubled home mortgages. Such settlements would keep funds flowing to the lender, albeit at a lower amount, prevent upheaval of the family, and provide the lender with a pre-negotiated, faster remedy than foreclosure if the agreement is breached.
Could it work? McKnight and Erickson point out that a similar approach in Minnesota during the farm crisis of the 1980s kept family farmers on the land and reduced lender losses. In today’s markets, negotiated settlements would keep the problem between the parties and avoid the domino effect on neighborhoods, Main Street, and Wall Street. Mediation: A Collaborative Investment in our Community Annual Conference Featuring Jackie Ryle Friday, March 14, 2008 8:30 - 4:30 p.m. California State University, Fresno - Smittcamp Alumni House Fresno, California
We are honored to have Dr. Jackie Ryle as our featured speaker and presenter. Dr. Ryle served as the director of the Dispute Settlement Center of Fresno, during which time she formed the first ADR association in this region. As a leader in the field, she has had a profound impact of the development of local and regional ADR programs. Dr. Ryle currently teaches conflict management skills to masters and doctoral students and also leads groups through team development, communication, leadership, and collaboration training. Questions? Contact dfmediator@inreach.com.
The Greater Delaware Valley chapter of ACR, which has about 60 members from New Jersey, Delaware, Philadelphia and surrounding counties up to Bethlehem, is making arrangements, including training, to have 17 individuals spend 10 days [March 5-14] in Palestine and Israel actively listening to a full spectrum of citizens. The Greater Delaware Valley chapter hopes to bring back to its hometown visual and narrative summaries of this experience to capture the imagination of audiences regarding the potential of mediation in a variety of settings. In December and January, the chapter had local experts such as Sharon Browning discuss skills and provide training for meeting attendees to make active listening as effective as possible so that both the listener and the speaker leave the ‘active listening’ event with a better understanding of the issues.
The Board of Directors of ACR-Hawaii had a retreat in January in a hula halau at the edge of an ancient lo‘i, a Hawaiian irrigated terrace for growing taro. It was a perfect setting for “talking story,” building a team, and defining activity-based opportunities for the chapter. The primary focus was on finding ways to create sustainable funding and establishing a web portal as the main vehicle for member services and community communication and education. The Hawaii chapter has supported educational programs and several initiatives were identified to support “youth” programs through conflict resolution education, peer mediation, and nurturing future conflict resolution professionals in the university and post graduate school.
Members were encouraged to, and did, comment on a set of proposed rules before the Hawaii Supreme Court redefining and expanding upon the “unauthorized practice of law."
Chapter Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws were submitted to, reviewed, and approved by ACR-National, bringing the chapter one step closer to achieving 501(c)(3) status.
Conflict Resolution Minnesota will have its Annual Spring Conference, “Bridging the Divide,” on Friday, May 2, 2008. Only $95 for CRM members ($135 for non-members). We are currently receiving presenter proposals. For questions/proposals contact: amartin@ccspm.org or crm@visi.com.
