  • "The Move"

Physically, the move (to 5151 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, #500, Washington, DC 20016) went smoothly. No broken pictures, monitors, or table legs. Staff spent about a week and half packing and throwing stuff out. Specialists were brought in to move the computers, copier, and postage machine.

We knew that telecommunications would be the most difficult part of the move, and so we hired a consultant with 18 years of experience. She immediately saved us money by reducing the number of incoming lines by 67%. But for our T-1 line, things got complicated. First, our new office is not new. It is in a 40 year old building and 8 miles from downtown. Cabling was old and there was insufficient capacity at the site. Secondly, two companies were involved: Verizon and XO Communications, and there was considerable finger-pointing over who was responsible for doing what and when. The third factor was the impact of holidays and vacations on phone company personnel and scheduling. We dealt with 5 different supervisors at one of the companies. Needless to say, discussion of reparations is underway. Thank you for your patience.

Was it worth it? Here is the bottom line: The move saves every ACR member $10 in dues for 2008 and the next seven years.

    Communications Update

After a number of weeks without email communication, the ACR staff’s internet service has been restored. Although the staff was available to serve members by telephone following the office move, the lack of electronic communication presented a major challenge to all. We apologize very much for the inconvenience that the break in technological access had caused.

If you have sent any email messages to staff members at headquarters between December 14, 2007 and January 7, 2008, we regret that they were not received. Now that our internet/email service has been restored, we ask that you resend any necessary email messages to the staff members you had tried to reach.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

    ACR in the News
    • The December issue of Association Meetings tackled the subject of diversity and inclusivity in meetings, and pointed out the many steps that ACR takes. Said the editor, ACR is “one example of an organization that has diversity in its DNA.” ACR was cited as a model example of an association which practices diversity in meetings in an article entitled “Bias? What Bias?” from a recent edition of Association Meetings. In it, Executive Director Doug Kleine describes how ACR’s Diversity & Equity policy is incorporated into the association’s strategic plan.  The article, by Sue Pelletier, can be found by following this link.

    • ACR Executive Director Doug Kleine, in a front page interview in Association Trends about issues facing associations in 2008, drew upon ACR’s wise decision to get BoardSource to evaluate ACR from top to bottom and said, “There is a need for consultants who can give an organizational assessment so that the board can see the error of hiring a new executive on the rebound without figuring out what to change.”

    • Comments from Ray Lanier, ACR past President, were recently included in an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) “leader-to-leader” section of the association’s monthly publication. The feature addressed the future of associations.

In the piece, Ray stated, "As people of color continue to grow as a percentage of the U.S. population, associations will look different in terms of both staff and membership composition. Add to that the likely increase in international membership focus. Many associations will [have to] be more culturally proficient, or they will cease to exist."

This January 2008 edition of ASAE’s Associations Now publication was the Volunteer Leadership Issue.

Grant to Benefit ACR Youth Intern Program

ACR has received the James B. Boskey Memorial Foundation Grant to support an intern at ACR headquarters. The Youth Intern Program trains the next generation of leaders in the conflict resolution field. Working with ACR staff and volunteer leadership provides our interns with the unusual opportunity to learn from the best in the field and gain first-hand experience. With the generous support from the James B. Boskey Memorial Foundation, ACR will provide stipends to three interns allowing future leaders to become active participants in the emerging conflict resolution community.

Our Youth Intern Program allows us to develop the leadership skills of future conflict resolution practitioners who will become intimately involved in various key projects such as the ACR’s Annual Conference, Conflict Resolution Day, and fundraising, membership and publication efforts to help ACR expand.

    Houston Chapter

Houston Chapter will be engaging the audience in an analysis of a simulated workplace crisis created by a conflict between a supervisor and another employee in the January membership program, the hidden costs of conflict  on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will take place at Brady’s Landing in Houston, Texas.

We’re all familiar with the costs of arbitration, litigation and other forms of dispute resolution, but what about the “other costs” of conflict that are rarely taken into account by management or labor when a dispute remains unresolved? What can the parties do to set the stage for a more collaborative approach to problem-solving?

Join Crisis Communication Consultant Allan Bonner and Conflict Management Consultant Connie Barnaba in a point – counterpoint discussion of the real cost of unmanaged conflict and the cost of damage control once a crisis is in full gear.

    Northern California Chapter

Are you a new or young mediator or thinking about entering the increasingly in-demand field of conflict resolution? How do you get started? What are the challenges faced by woman, people of color or anyone with a non-traditional background? Is it possible to establish a professional practice if you "don't fit the mold?" These and other inquiries were explored Thursday, November 15, from 6pm to 8pm in a panel discussion forum, "The Dynamics of Race and Gender: Addressing Key Challenges in the Field," organized by the Northern California chapter of ACR—the Association For Dispute Resolution of Northern California (ADRNC), in collaboration with the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), East Bay Community Mediation (EBCM), San Francisco Community Boards, and Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC). This was the second in a series of ADRNC Diversity and Equity events.

Panel members Yolanda Jackson, BASF Diversity Director and mediator; Selina Low, facilitator, trainer and mediator; and Shar Etebar, EBCM Executive Director and ADRNC board treasurer, fielded questions from moderator, Asian American Bar Association board member, Yu-Yee Wu, on topics that ranged from where to get training to traditional and creative ways to enter the field.

This no-cost program was attended by 31 active participants. Sushi and refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Kim Randolph is a San Francisco resident, mediator and diversity
consultant. She can be reached at krand@mail.com.

"Shar Etebar, Selina Low, and Yolanda Jackson addressed the participants as guest speakers at the ADRNC organized event"
