Phoenix “Valley of the Sun” is surrounded by history and mystery
The name “Phoenix”
was chosen by Lord Darrell Duppa who was inspired by the idea of
creating a new community from the ruins of the ancient Hohokam
civilization who had begun living in the area as early as 700
AD. However, historical record still credits Jack Swilling with
the naming of Phoenix.
Ongoing growth and development helped Phoenix later become the capital of Arizona. Presently, more than half the state’s residents live in Phoenix, which is now the 5th largest city in the United States and is projected to be the 4th largest by 2008. Phoenix offers plenty for the visitor to see and do. Tales of gunfights, ghosts and fortunes won and lost, beckon many a traveler seeking to learn if there really is gold to be found in the world-famous “Lost Dutchman Gold Mine” located in the Superstition Mountains, near Apache Junction, Arizona. Other visitors will find adventure in enjoying a round of golf, touring a winery in Sedona, relaxing at a spa, riding a mountain bike, hiking, boating, fishing or simply strolling in the warm winter climate from October through April. For those wanting to taste the history of Phoenix, you will want to consider seeking out Indian fry bread or authentic Mexican dishes as well as listening to the music of a Mariachi band.
The amateur botanist
will need not travel far to see the official state tree, the
palo verde or a saguaro (see photo below). The saguaro is native
to the Sonoran Desert and grows so slowly that it takes up to 75
years to develop a side arm. The saguaro is home to many small
creatures seeking shelter and food, including the cactus wren,
Arizona’s state bird.
Come early, stay late - Phoenix is eager to welcome you to the 2007 ACR Annual Conference, October 24 – 27. See you in Phoenix! -The Annual Conference Planning Committee

Section Teleseminars “Resolving Conflicts at Work” presented by Kenneth Cloke, May 1, 2007, 3 pm Eastern/12:00 noon Pacific The Spirituality Section’s teleconference series continues on May 1, 2007 with a teleconference on “Resolving Conflicts at Work” presented by Kenneth Cloke. Every workplace generates chronic conflicts, yet few organizations have examined their "conflict culture" to see how conflicts are generated, supported and reinforced. Fewer still have conducted "conflict audits" to discover where these streams of conflict come from, or designed multi-layered complex systems to improve their capacity for conflict prevention, management, settlement and resolution. Instead, conflicts are viewed as personal failures; structures, systems and strategies are left unexamined in spite of their contribution to the continuation of the conflict; and the human beings who work in the organization increasingly suffer from loss of communication, partnership, trust and morale.
