OVERVIEW OF ARTICLES March 2007 |
| [1] Organizational Assessment and Transition | ||
ACR’s Board is making steady progress guiding the 2006-07 transition period. Linda Baron is in place as ACR’s interim executive director (previously announced). Most will know or know of Linda. She is the former Executive Director of the National Conference on Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution (NCPCR) and the National Association for Community Mediation (NAFCM) and also worked for the ABA Section on DR. Recruiting someone like Linda was the Board’s first priority. Second priority was retaining consultants to conduct an organizational assessment and bring forth analysis and recommendations for Board consideration as we move ACR into the future. The organizational assessment is well along, with the help of consultant Maureen Robinson, assisted by Rick Moyers. Robinson and Moyers are assessing current organizational capacity and will recommend strategies and actions to improve ACR’s ability to serve its members and manage its affairs. There is a particular focus on key aspects of management, governance, and finances. They are also advising the Board on the skills and experience needed in its next executive director. Both Robinson and Moyers held senior positions at the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, which is now BoardSource, and have published books on non-profit leadership and management. Robinson authored Nonprofit Boards that Work: The End of One-Size-Fits-All Governance, John Wiley & Sons, 2001. Moyers is author of The Nonprofit Chief Executive’s Ten Basic Responsibilities, BoardSource, 2006; and co-author of Daring to Lead, 2006. He is Director of the Nonprofit Sector Fund at the Meyer Foundation in Washington, DC, and is working as an independent consultant on this project (the Foundation does not fund in the area of conflict resolution). During its winter meeting at the end of March, the Board will review the consultants’ report and recommendations. It expects to make initial decisions on new directions and then continue refining strategies and moving forward following the meeting. The April ACRUpdate will provide further news. ACR faces many challenges and the Board feels that the steps underway are producing concrete results.

| [2] ACR 2007 Annual Conference - Save the Date! | ||
The Arizona Chapter is looking forward to hosting the ACR 7th Annual Conference, Rethinking the Table: People, Places, and Practices, from October 24-27, 2007 in Phoenix. We join ACR in inviting you to come to the Annual Conference to rekindle friendships and meet new members, to learn about conflict resolution in traditional and non-traditional ways, to explore and share innovative ideas, and to continue our conversations about diversity and equity. Arizona is a culturally and geographically diverse State. Our heritage draws from Spanish and American Indian influences which stretch across Arizona from small towns like Bisbee or Jerome, former copper mining towns, to Tucson—the “Old Pueblo”—to Phoenix, the fifth largest metropolitan area in the United States, to the Grand Canyon, truly one of the world’s great natural wonders. October is one of the most pleasant times of the year in Phoenix and throughout Arizona. Many attendees will come only for the Conference. Others may bring family members and extend their stay, either before or after the Conference. As hosts, we want you to enjoy and experience as much as possible in the time you have in Arizona. Between now and October, we will provide information each month in ACR Update that we hope will whet your appetite for the Annual Conference and make your visit to Phoenix, Arizona more enjoyable. In the coming months, we will highlight a range of topics, including:

For information on how to submit your proposal, please visit www.mediate.com/acrepp. Upcoming Section Teleseminars!
One of the most empowering choices parties can make is to forgive those who they perceive to have injured or wronged them, rather than continue to feel victimized. Forgiveness enables parties to let go of the past and move forward in their lives. By learning more about the process of forgiveness, professionals can offer parties a critically important tool for gaining closure on a dispute. This session will look at why forgiveness is important -- in all types of disputes, be they commercial, workplace, family or other. For more information visit http://www.mediate.com/acrspirituality.
