News from ACR
Fifth Annual Conference
|

At ACR’s Fifth Annual
Conference, “Conflict Resolution in a Changing
World: Building the Practice and Fostering Hope,”
1,000 attendees participated in more than 200
workshops, meetings, receptions, facilitated
dialogues, mini-plenaries, and other events. The
opening plenary featured a keynote address by
noted activist and author Frances Moore Lappé,
followed by a question and answer session with the
audience, which provided an inspirational start to
the Annual Conference.
Early arrivers enjoyed
pre-conference sessions and International Day.
Thursday evening was capped with the Welcome
Reception in the Exhibitors’ Hall, where some 40
exhibitors offered information, products and
services for the conflict resolution community. Some 100
participants enjoyed Friday evening watching
Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” at
the Fitzgerald Theater in nearby St. Paul, while
many others attended various receptions hosted by
several Sections. At the Presidential Luncheon on
the final day of the Annual Conference, the
Presidential Award was given to Nicholas Dewar
for his outstanding service as ACR’s Treasurer
from 2003-2005. Nina R. Meierding received
the John M. Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award,
and John Helie was awarded the Mary Parker
Follett Award. It was announced that the James
Boskey Memorial Youth Scholarship was given in
support of the K-12 youth attendees at the Annual
Conference’s Fast Track Day for students and
educators.
Thank you to the sponsors,
exhibitors, presenters and attendees who helped
make ACR’s Fifth Annual Conference such a success,
and the Annual Conference Program Committee for
designing a stellar program.
A more detailed report on the
Fifth Annual Conference will be published in the
Fall issue of ACResolution magazine. In the
meantime, ACR members can continue talking about
the Annual Conference by logging in to the Member

The ACR Dallas Chapter will
open its fall season with its Fifth Annual Judicial
Panel, one of the many accomplishments credited to
outgoing Chapter president Sheikha S. Hobeiche. The Judicial
Panel, where area judges discuss the courts’ views
and procedures with ACR members, was one of Ms. Hobeiche’s first undertakings when she served as
Vice President of the Dallas Chapter in 1999.
Since then she has created several programs to
increase public awareness of ACR including the
annual Children’s Mock Trial at the Dallas County
Courthouse. This event gives the children a hands-on
experience in the courtroom and is frequently
covered by the local media. Ms. Hobeiche has
improved the quality of the monthly
Professional-Educational Lectures and Programs by
instituting an evaluation of each program by those
attending. She has created the position of assistant
treasurer for the Dallas Chapter to improve
continuity from one treasurer to the next. All
these changes have resulted in a consistent increase
in membership and meeting attendance in each of her
years as president. Well done, Ms. Hobeiche.
Ms. Hobeiche will be stepping down as President at
the end of this year but will stay active as the
Diversity Chair Person and Ex-Officio. The
Dallas Chapter’s President-Elect, Joe Hewitt, will
begin his term as President on Jan. 1, 2006.
