[1] ACR Launches Member-Get-A-Member
Campaign!
==============================================
ACR Launches Member-Get-A-Member Campaign!
Did you know that you receive a $10
discount on your dues for every new
member you recruit for ACR?
Simply ask the new member to list your
name as the referral source on the membership
application. When your membership comes
up for renewal, your dues will reflect
the reduced rate. For example, if you’re
a general member of ACR and you recruit
one new member, your dues will be reduced
from $120 to $110 for the coming year.
If you can recruit one new member a
month, your dues will be paid in full!
Anyone who recruits five or more members
between January 1 and June 1, 2002 will
be listed in the ACR 2002 annual conference
program and receive special recognition
at the President’s Luncheon. As
an added recruitment incentive, ACR
will award a free conference registration
to the person who recruits the greatest
number of members. For more information,
contact ACR Director of Membership Teresa
Evans by phone at 202-667-9700, ext.
206, or by e-mail: tevans@acresolution.org.

OCM Section Conference a Success!
The Organizational Conflict Management
Section held a highly successful mid-year
conference in Atlanta, November 30-December
2. Forty people attended. Talks by Industry
representatives and Section members
and the use of Open Space Technology
led to discussions that ranged from
the theoretical to the practical. Section
members plan to have the next section
conference in the spring of 2003 (submitted
by John Conbere).
YOUTH M-POWER! to Offer Youth Leadership
Development Trainings in 2002
YOUTH M-POWER! is expanding its programs!
As of February 2002, YMP! will be offering
leadership development trainings to
middle and high school youth in the
DC metropolitan area.
Our goal is to train youth (ages 14-18)
in conflict resolution skills, while
emphasizing the values of citizenship,
intercultural communication, diversity
awareness, and leadership. These two-day
trainings will provide youth participants
with an opportunity to not only learn
the benefits of conflict resolution,
but also gain practical conflict resolution
skills that they can use in their homes,
schools, and communities.
A Youth Advisory Committee has been
created to assist program staff and
trainers in developing training curriculum
guidelines and criteria for selecting
youth participants, including all aspects
of the application process.
If you are interested in participating
in the program as a trainer, please
contact YMP! Program Manager, Winnehl
Tubman at wtubman@acresolution.org,
or 202-667-9700, ext. 204.

DC ACR Holiday Party a Grand Success!
The Washington, DC chapter of the Association
for Conflict Resolution joined with
several of their fellow regional dispute
resolution groups in hosting a holiday
event December 5 at the Charles Sumner
School in the District. Approximately
60 members of DC ACR mixed and mingled
with such organizations as the Virginia
and Maryland Chapters of ACR, the ABA
Section on Dispute Resolution, the Center
for ADR, the Institute for Conflict
Analysis and Resolution, the National
Association For Community Mediation,
and the Northern Virginia Mediation
Service. The party brought together
members of the ADR community from all
walks of life -- students and long-time
practitioners, family mediators and
federal dispute resolution specialists.
This was a chance to meet colleagues
from a different aspect of the field
or reconnect with old friends. While
party-goers were busy making conversation
and connections, they were also supporting
two worthy charities -- For the Love
of Children and Capitol Area Food Bank.
DC ACR board members were able to deliver
several bags of food and presents to
needy kids, as well as significant financial
donations. Many thanks to all who contributed
to this good time and good deeds! (Submitted
by Sarah Rudgers.)
Maryland Chapter Welcomes New Officers
The Maryland Chapter of ACR extends
its congratulations and good wishes
to its newly elected officers: Elly
D. Cleaver, president-elect; Susan C.
Birch, treasurer; Dolores H. Crawford,
secretary; and its newly elected Board
members -- Craig A. Brieske, L. Toyo
Obayashi, and Jonathan S. Rosenthal.
Metropolitan New York Chapter
On Tuesday, December 4, the New York
Chapter program committee put on a very
successful event titled, "Successful
Crossovers in Mediation: Different Styles
and Practice Areas." We had nearly
100 people in attendance and raised
$1500 between membership dues, book
sales, and the program itself. Twenty-five
new members joined. The program was
well promoted by our five cosponsors.
Access Communications, a professional
role-play group, donated their services
and presented the same family business
case to be mediated 3 different ways.
Roger Dietz used an evaluative approach;
Janice-Tudy Jackson used a facilitative
approach; and Julie Denny (filling in
for Sally Pope) used a transformative
approach. There was much discussion
after the role-plays and the audience
seemed to thoroughly enjoy the event.
Our next event will be a follow up to
this and will focus only on transformative
mediation. It is tentatively scheduled
for February 2002. (submitted by Tara
Jankner)

[7] Featured ACR Product
==============================================
ACR, and our founding organizations
(AFM, CREnet, and SPIDR), have developed
a number of conflict resolution products
that reflect the wide range of interests
and practice areas of our members. In
each ACR Update, we will feature one
of these products.
This issue's featured product is:
Mediation: It's Up to You
A Public Education Video Featuring Jay
Folberg Narrating and Margaret Shaw
Mediating
The perfect tool for introducing clients
and referrals to mediation, this 23-minute
VHS videotape provides a summary of
the essential qualities of the mediation
process, and presents three segments
of a mediation involving a divorcing
couple. In addition to needing to solve
issues around the parenting of their
son, the couple is faced with challenging
issues concerning their jointly-owned
business and their home. Mediation:
It's Up to You goes behind the scenes
of the mediation to interview the participants,
the mediator, and other professionals
associated with the mediation.
This valuable marketing resource is
available from ACR for $59.95. To order,

[8] Featured Article from ACR Learning
Center
==============================================
We are committed to educating our members
and the general public about conflict
resolution. Therefore, in each ACR Update,
we will feature an article from the
ACR Learning Center that we think will
be of value to our members.
This issue's featured article is: "Designing
a Safety Net for Disabled Employees,"
by Arthur L. Finkle. An excerpt of the
article follows.
"The Americans With Disabilities
Act requires an employer to consider
a reasonable accommodation for qualified
employees who, with or without reasonable
accommodation, can perform the essential
functions of their job. This article
addresses what happens when employees
are not qualified or cannot perform
the functions of their job. Do you fire
them because they are physically or
mentally unable to work? Is there a
more humane way of releasing such employees
with a modicum of dignity?"

[10] Quotes
==============================================
On December 10, the 2001 Nobel Peace
Prize was awarded equally to the United
Nations and its Secretary-General, Kofi
Annan. Excerpts from Kofi Annan’s
Nobel Lecture, given in Oslo on December
10, follow. The entire lecture may be
read at http://www.nobel.se/peace/laureates/2001/annan-lecture.html
"A genocide begins with the killing
of one man, not for what he has done,
but because of who he is. A campaign
of 'ethnic cleansing' begins with one
neighbour turning on another. Poverty
begins when even one child is denied
his or her fundamental right to education.
What begins with the failure to uphold
the dignity of one life, all too often
ends with a calamity for entire nations.
"In this new century, we must
start from the understanding that peace
belongs not only to states or peoples,
but to each and every member of those
communities. The sovereignty of States
must no longer be used as a shield for
gross violations of human rights. Peace
must be made real and tangible in the
daily existence of every individual
in need. Peace must be sought, above
all, because it is the condition for
every member of the human family to
live a life of dignity and security....
"The idea that there is one people
in possession of the truth, one answer
to the world’s ills, or one solution
to humanity’s needs, has done
untold harm throughout history, especially
in the last century. Today, however,
even amidst continuing ethnic conflict
around the world, there is a growing
understanding that human diversity is
both the reality that makes dialogue
necessary, and the very basis for that
dialogue....
"Each of us has the right to take
pride in our particular faith or heritage.
But the notion that what is ours is
necessarily in conflict with what is
theirs is both false and dangerous.
It has resulted in endless enmity and
conflict, leading men to commit the
greatest of crimes in the name of a
higher power.
"It need not be so. People of
different religions and cultures live
side by side in almost every part of
the world, and most of us have overlapping
identities which unite us with very
different groups. We can love what we
are, without hating what, and who, we
are not. We can thrive in our own tradition,
even as we learn from others, and come
to respect their teachings."
