1. Call for Nominations for ACR’s 2005-2006 Board of Directors Election

ACR’s Governance Committee is soliciting nominations for the following positions on the 2005–2006 Board of Directors:

  • A President-Elect, who will serve a three-year term, one year as President-Elect; one year as President; and one year as Immediate Past President. The ACR Bylaws require a contested election for this position. The candidate with the largest number of votes becomes President-Elect. The candidate with the next-largest number of votes becomes Vice-President and serves a one-year term.

  • Four Directors, including a Sections Director, a Chapters Director and two “at large” Directors, who will each serve three-year terms. The Sections and Chapters Directors are elected by the membership to serve as liaisons with the Sections and Chapters, respectively. One of the two “at large” Directors will be elected by the membership and the Board will appoint the other “at large” Director.

Members interested in learning more about these open positions or the nomination process should go to: http://www.ACRnet.org/about/2005elections.htm. All nominations must be submitted via email to ballot@ACRnet.org by May 28, 2005.

2. Workplace Section: New Labor and Employment Arbitrator Advanced Practitioner

The ACR Workplace Section is pleased to announce the new Labor and Employment Arbitrator Advanced Practitioner (AP) designation. A labor and employment arbitrator is a neutral with substantial experience in labor arbitration and/or employment arbitration. This new AP designation represents a significant level of experience beyond the ACR Practitioner level in issues related to workplace grievances and litigated employment disputes. Please go to the ACR website and click on the “Find A Mediator/Arbitrator” button for more information on this new membership category.

6. Access ACR’s Membership Directory Online

A Note on the ACR Membership Directory:

Starting in 2005, ACR now has an online Directory, which allows for up-to-the-minute accuracy. Whenever a member’s contact information is updated in our database, that change is immediately reflected in the online Membership Directory.

Due to our growing membership, the 2004 Directory is now out of date. If you have installed that version of the Directory on your hard drive it appears to have the capability of updating your computer with new membership data; however, this feature is not functional.

The only way to access up-to-the-minute listings of ACR members is to log in to the Online Member Center and click on the link reading “MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY.”

7. Section Teleconference Series: Consumer, Family, Crisis Intervention

Upcoming Section Teleconferences

Please note: Section teleconferences are a Section member benefit. To join a Section, log in to ACR’s Online Member Center, click on “My Account History,” then “Add Sections,” and select the Sections you want to add.

Family Section Telephone Talk: Thursday, May 26, 2005 at 4:30 p.m. (EDT)

Join the Family Section for a Telephone Talk featuring Natalie J. Armstrong of Golden Media. This talk on “Strategic Marketing for Mediators” will provide you with core concepts and strategic perspectives of marketing. Natalie will address basic marketing techniques, including segmenting and targeting customers, developing a unique brand, and making effective advertising decisions. This is an opportunity to develop knowledge about key marketing concepts and the tools required to compete in today’s conflict resolution industry, and to learn how to apply them to practical business situations.

Crisis Intervention Section 2005 Teleseminar Series: “How Do They Do That?”

On June 2, 2005, ACR’s Crisis Intervention Section will inaugurate a five-part Teleseminar Series for Crisis Interveners where experts from law enforcement, workplace, education, family, and the mental health fields will share their top crisis management techniques together with anecdotes from their own experience.

The series kicks off with “Verbal Judo: How Law Enforcement Uses Conflict Resolution on the Streets,” on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 1 p.m. (EDT). When summer arrives, the heat turns up on cops as neighborhood disputes, domestic violence, and gang warfare emerge from the cold. James T. Shanahan, a decorated veteran of more than 20 years in law enforcement and a national trainer in the art of Verbal Judo, shows how he uses conflict resolution to deal with incidents that cops face every day. Jim is a Senior Instructor for the NYPD, a graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and an adjunct professor at John Jay College. Join us for a new look at a familiar technique as Officer Shanahan demonstrates how he combines tactical communications and conflict resolution, using anecdotes from his own experience.

10. QUOTATIONS

It takes a while to grasp that not all failures are self-imposed, the result of ignorance, carelessness or inexperience. It takes a while to grasp that a garden isn’t a testing ground for character and to stop asking, what did I do wrong? Maybe nothing.

– Eleanor Perényi, Green Thoughts, 1981

You can’t be suspicious of a tree, or accuse a bird or a squirrel of subversion or challenge the ideology of a violet.

– Hal Borland, Sundial of the Seasons, 1964

But a weed is simply a plant that wants to grow where people want something else. In blaming nature, people mistake the culprit. Weeds are people’s idea, not nature’s.

– Author Unknown

The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks.

– Tennessee Williams
