Make your plans now to attend the ACR Organizational Conflict Management Section Conference at the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, November 29-December 1, 2001. The conference program has been designed to offer attendees numerous opportunities for networking, idea exchanges, theory discussion, and an in-depth look at issues involving "Open Space Technology." Located in Midtown Atlanta, the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel provides easy access to restaurants, galleries, and theaters. For more information and a copy of the brochure, please click here: http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/conferences, or contact Erin Weiss in the ACR Conferences & Programs Department at 202-667-9700, ext. 210, or via e-mail at eweiss@acresolution.org.

2002 ACR Conference Call for Proposals due November 30, 2001
The Association for Conflict Resolution’s (ACR) first annual conference -- "Coming Together: Community, Connection & Conflict"-- held in Toronto this past October, was a remarkable success! More then 1400 attendees and presenters participated in over 200 workshops, sharing and learning together to create a wonderful conference experience for presenters and attendees alike. We are eager to build on that success in 2002.

Proposals for a workshop presentation at our next annual conference, "Coastal Collaboration: Emerging Practices in a New Era of Conflict Resolution," which will be held August 21-24, 2002, in San Diego, California, are being accepted now. To submit a proposal, please click here: http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/conferences.
Please note that the deadline for submitting proposals is Friday, November 30, 2001. If you would like a hard copy of the form faxed to you, or need assistance completing the form, please contact the ACR office at 202-667-9700, or e-mail conferences@acresolution.org.

Whether you plan on joining us as a presenter or an attendee, the 2nd Annual ACR Conference is sure to be an event you won't want to miss!

ACR Family Section Conference
The ACR Family Section Conference, "Many Faces of Family Mediation," will be held at the Marriott Riverside in Savannah, Georgia, February 28-March 2, 2002. We are excited about the events planned, as well as the more than forty workshop sessions that will be offered. Mock mediations with expert mediators will not only provide an opportunity to observe master mediators at work, but also encourage an interactive format to find out why mediators do what they do when they do it. The conference brochure and full registration form will be available online at the ACR Web site, http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/conferences, and in hard copy in December. We look forward to seeing you in Savannah early next year!

Coming in the next issue of ACResolution ... a new column focusing on Best Practices in Diversity and Conflict Resolution! Contributions welcomed.

Starting with the April 2002 issue of ACResolution, a new quarterly column on diversity will highlight practical strategies for training conflict resolution professionals in specific cross-cultural and diversity skills, describe model approaches to resolving complex disputes in various U.S. subcultures and abroad, and present case studies of programs and interventions in the field of diversity and conflict resolution. Each “best practice” chosen for publication will be introduced by Dr. Benjamin D. Reese, Jr., who has worked in the field of race-relations, cross-cultural communication, and diversity training for more than 30 years.

To contribute to this new column, please send 500- to 600-word descriptions of innovative and successful strategies/programs/models/case studies that further the practice of conflict resolution and diversity, or the training of conflict resolution professionals who work with diverse populations. ACR CEO Addresses the MACRO Advisory Board

On Wednesday, November 14, 2001, ACR’s new CEO David Hart gave his first public presentation at the Advisory Board Meeting of the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO). One of the few court-based programs in the U.S., MACRO includes such Maryland State luminaries as the Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals and Advisory Board Chair, the Honorable Robert M. Bell. In introducing David, MACRO Executive Director Rachel Wohl, a conflict resolution pioneer and the recipient of ACR’s prestigious Mary Parker Follett Award, said “I heard him speak in Toronto, and he blew me away!”

Invited to speak on the “Past, Present and Future: Perspective on the Role of Dispute Resolution in American Society,” David confidently and articulately related how ADR creates win-win outcomes and durable solutions. He also addressed the issue of credentialing, which he said offers protection to the consumer and advances the credibility of the field. Regarding ACR’s mission to advance the field and educate the general public about the value and effectiveness of conflict resolution, he repeated a statement he made at the annual meeting in Toronto: “ACR is an organization on the brink of greatness!”

To achieve that greatness, we need the combined strength of conflict resolvers with the experiences, wisdom, and willingness to help us advance the field. If you are not already a member of ACR, please visit the Web site at http://www.acresolution.org/ and click on “Join Us” to learn about all the benefits of membership in ACR. If you are a member, become one of our champions. Introduce a friend or colleague to the many professional resources ACR offers. Be a part of this great history in the making!

Youth M-Power! Update
YOUTH M-POWER! Program Manager, Winnehl Tubman, recently received and accepted an invitation to participate in a Youth Violence Assessment for the city of Detroit. The event was sponsored by the Michigan State Public Health Institute (MPHI) in conjunction with Wayne State University and the Youth Connection (a Detroit-based youth development organization), and was held in Detroit, October 26 – 29, 2001.

YOUTH M-POWER! was invited by the MPHI to serve on a team of national experts in the area of youth violence prevention to offer recommendations designed to improve the effectiveness of youth violence prevention and intervention efforts for the city of Detroit. In addition to being a wonderful learning experience, it represented a great networking opportunity for YMP! and an ideal chance to spread the word about the program as well as ACR’s commitment to positive youth development and leadership.

For more information about the event and a copy of the final report, please contact Winnehl Tubman, Program Manager, YOUTH M-POWER! at wtubman@youthm-power.org. To learn more about what Youth M-Power! is doing, visit the Web site: http://www.youthm-power.org/

[7] Featured Article
==============================================

We are committed to educating our members and the general public about
conflict resolution. In each ACR Update, we will feature a new article
that we think will be of value to our members.

This week, our featured article is: "Open Space Technology and The Organizational Conflict Management Section," by John Zinsser, with thanks to Harris Owen and Richard Hopkins.
An excerpt from the article:

"Have you ever noticed how many of the best conversations at conferences happen by chance in the hallway, during coffee breaks, or over dinners? While scheduled events provide a lot of information and stimulate a person's thinking, the scheduled events often are not where the 'action' and the energy are.
Open Space sets up an environment to make the coffee breaks, the spontaneous conversations, the exchanges, the participant's energy and interests, and the self-selected groupings, the very heart of the conference.
Given the passion and energy of the people involved in organizational conflict management, the relatively few venues we have to express opinions to others who appreciate what we face, OST makes great sense. Open Space is designed to empower individuals and the group by putting the opportunity and responsibility for creating a valuable experience in their hands by providing just enough structure for doing it (see Four Rules and a Law below). This builds energy, commitment; and shared leadership with the least possible time wasted on complicated logistics and advance planning."

[10] Quotes
==============================================

"Fifty years from now it will not matter what kind of car you drove, what kind of house you lived in, how much you had in your bank account, or what your clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because you were important in the life of a child." -- Andrea J. Evans

"For nothing is fixed, forever and forever and forever, it is not fixed; the earth is always shifting, the light is always changing, the sea does not cease to grind down rock. Generations do not cease to be born, and we are responsible to them because we are the only witnesses they have. The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out." -- James Baldwin

"It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power." -- Alan Cohen
