STRATEGIC PLANNING UPDATE FROM ACR CEO DAVID HART

Dear ACR members:

As regular readers of ACR Update know, ACR is in the midst of a participatory and flexible Strategic Planning process. An overview of the process is provided below; for a fuller explanation of this important effort, please visit the ACR Web site: http://www.acrnet.org/strategicplanning/.

This January, ACR President Rosemary Romero appointed a Strategic Planning Task Force, charged with helping the Board of Directors plan the process, reaching out to the leadership and membership for input, and pulling together working materials in advance of the Board’s June 2004 strategic planning meeting.

Since January, the Strategic Planning Task Force has:
·Engaged ACR’s leaders and members in consideration of the organization’s Vision / Mission / Values Statements
·Requested that the leadership of chapters, sections, committees, and task forces contribute to the next stage in the process, the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis, in which they were to describe what they think are ACR’s internal strengths and weaknesses, and the external opportunities and threats that may exist.
·Prepared drafts of key components of the strategic plan, which will form the basis for the June 17–18, 2004 Board of Directors meeting, during which the draft strategic plan will be developed.

We will share the results of the Board of Directors’ strategic planning meeting with the leadership and membership. Please stay tuned for further developments and requests for input.

Sincerely,

David A. Hart
CEO, Association for Conflict Resolution

ACR'S YOUTH MENTOR PROGRAM UPDATE

The ACR Youth Mentor Program, initiated in 2003, allows young people ages 16- 24 to learn about ACR and the dispute resolution field from top professionals.

In its first year of existence, the program made significant progress. Many ACR members had the opportunity to meet the four up-and-coming young dispute resolution professionals who are the current Youth Mentees -- Shawnta Washington, Tajae Gaynor, Antonio Sanford and Tracey Pastan -- at ACR's 2003 Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. While there, they presented multiple workshops, including one on the Youth Mentor Program, and spent valuable face-to-face time with their mentors. The Youth Mentors are Dan De Stephen, Janice Fleischer, Lynne Hurdle-Price, Marvin Johnson, Homer La Rue, Nina Meierding, Michael Mills, Rafael Montalvo, and Sharon Press.

The mentees each have found the Youth Mentor Program rewarding. Tracey Pastan served as a recorder for two meetings of the Joint Committee on Model Standards, in which ACR participates, and served on ACR's Membership and Legislative Public Policy Committees. Antonio Sanford served on ACR's 2004 Conference Program Committee with one of his mentors, and was asked to be a Diversity and Equity Point Person. He will participate in the Diversity & Equity Network's training in Maryland this month. Shawnta Washington participated as a member of ACR's Greater New York Chapter's Youth Advisory Committee and has aspirations to run for its board. Tajae Gaynor was exposed to a new arena for him, ombudsmans. He co-presented at a national conference in Washington D.C. with one of his mentors and is scheduled to present a workshop with Antonio Sanford at The Center For Dispute Resolution's 16th annual conference in Maryland this month. He is also contemplating running for the ACR Board.

The Youth Mentor Program is evaluating its progress and making recommendations for its future. What cannot be measured is the impact of the strong, lasting relationships that have developed through this effort. This worthwhile program is an important commitment to our youth. For more information on the Youth Mentor Program, please send an e-mail to ACR at acr@ACRnet.org.

RESEARCH SECTION UPDATE

The Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, in cooperation with the Intellectual Leadership and Next Generation Research Committee, is conducting an information-gathering survey of the Research Section membership. The survey is designed to collect demographics to be used in the online researcher directory that will soon become part of the Research Section's Web site. A second part of the survey, which will be reported only anonymously, will highlight the relationships that researchers and practitioners in our highly diverse discipline maintain with the field's professional and scholarly publication outlets. We can thank Greg Jones for this laudable effort. For more information, please visit the Section’s Web page at http://www.mediate.com/acrresearch.

In April 2003, the Section co-sponsored (with Penn State Dickinson School of Law and the Broad Field Project) an interdisciplinary symposium titled "Dispute Resolution and Capitulation to the Routine: Is There a Way Out?" The symposium, which was one of a series, was published in Vol. 108, No. 1 of the Penn State Law Review. For copies of the symposium issue, please contact Bob Ackerman at bxa9@psu.edu. The design, planning and execution of this series of conferences are described in a the Research Section's first publication, Engineering Broad-based Discussions: Engaging Multidisciplinary Groups to Create New ideas in Conflict Resolution, a monograph edited by Chris Honeyman and available in PDF format at http://www.convenor.com/madison/ACRRS1.htm.

NEW ENGLAND-ACR SUMMER INSTITUTE: JUNE 11, 2004

The New England Chapter of ACR (NEACR) hosts its Summer Institute, "Humor in Mediation: A Creative Tool or an Indulgence?," on Friday, June 11, 2004. Presented by Ashok Panikkar, the institute begins with registration and networking at 1 p.m., followed by the seminar from 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The event will be held at Wellesley College (Pendeleton East 239),Wellesley, MA. Please call 617-536-3227 or e-mail neacr@neacr.org for more information.

Program Description
In times of conflict and trouble, one of the first qualities that we lose is our sense of humor. This workshop will examine the wisdom of bringing back a sense of humor into an otherwise difficult (and perhaps not even remotely funny) situation. Can humor be a useful tool or is it a risky indulgence? Can the mediator inject humor into her remarks, and if so what kind of humor would be appropriate and useful? How does one facilitate (and moderate) a conversation where the parties are subtly encouraged to bring a lightness and a sense of humor into their deliberations so that everybody can feel safe and comfortable? Can laughing together help build community and a sense of togetherness?

Presenter
Ashok Panikkar is a mediator, facilitator and coach who works as Director of Training at Mediation For Results, a conflict resolution program in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has also been a consultant with the Anti-Defamation League's diversity and anti-bias training program, A World of Difference Institute, since 1997.
