[1] ACR Sponsors National Youth Violence Prevention Campaign
================================================

ACR is proud to be a sponsor of the Second Annual National Youth Violence
Prevention Campaign, an educational initiative founded by The National
Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.) and The
Guidance Channel. The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness and to
educate students, teachers, school administrators, counselors, school
resource officers, school staff, parents, and the public on effective ways
to prevent or reduce youth violence. The highlight of the campaign is a
week-long national education initiative, March 29-April 2, 2004, to promote
the positive role young people can have in making their schools and
communities safer.

For information on the National Youth Violence Prevention Campaign, please
contact Advocacy and Outreach Manager, Jennifer Druliner, at
jdruliner@ACRnet.org or visit the ACR Web site: http://www.ACRnet.org.

[2] ACR's 2004 Member-Get-A-Member Campaign
================================================

ACR has recently expanded its Member-Get-A-Member campaign.

ACR's 2004 MEMBER-GET-A-MEMBER CAMPAIGN

The Association for Conflict Resolution's 2004 Member-Get-Member campaign
is now underway. You depend on ACR, and we count on you, too! There are
lots of people who could benefit from all that ACR has to offer, but we
need YOU to identify them and ask them to join. Every time you recruit a
new member, you strengthen ACR. A vital and growing ACR means greater
recognition of the ADR profession, improved educational and networking
opportunities for all members, and the advancement of the conflict
resolution field worldwide.

This year, with our special Member-Get-A-Member Drive, we've made referring
colleagues to ACR easier and more rewarding than ever! Simply provide us
with your colleagues' names and contact information and we'll send them a
prospective membership package. You can also print membership applications
from the ACR Web site and deliver them to your colleagues in person or
direct them to join online at http://www.ACRnet.org.

ACR is pleased to offer a generous incentive program for membership
recruitment:

*For each member you recruit, ACR will apply a $10 credit to your next
year's dues.

*Recruit 5?8 new members and ACR will send you a gift certificate for
$25.00, which may be used towards ACR products, plus $10 for each member
recruited.

*Recruit 9?11 new members and ACR will give you a year of free membership
and a 50% discount off your next conference registration.

*Recruit 12+ members and ACR will give you a year of free membership and a
free conference registration.

In addition, top recruiters will be recognized once a year in ACResolution
magazine and thanked at the ACR Annual Conference. For more information,
contact Yvonne Inniss, Director of Membership and Development at (202)
464-9700, ext. 206.

[4] ACR Publications Update
================================================

CONFLICT RESOLUTION QUARTERLY SUBMISSIONS

Conflict Resolution Quarterly is ACR's quarterly academic journal. Its
mission is to publish scholarship on relationships between theory,
research, and practice in the conflict management and dispute resolution
field to promote more effective professional applications. Articles should
be directed to a multidisciplinary audience and be as readable and
practical as possible. Submissions and questions regarding editorial
matters should be sent to Tricia S. Jones, Editor, Conflict Resolution
Quarterly, Dept. of Psychological Studies, College of Education, Temple
University, Philadelphia, PA 19122. You may also e-mail Tricia at
tsjones@astro.temple.edu.

ACRESOLUTION SUBMISSIONS

Planning is now underway for the Summer issue of ACResolution magazine.
Anyone wishing to submit a feature article for the Summer issue, whose
theme will be Restorative and Criminal Justice, should submit a short
abstract or proposal no later than March 1, 2004. Please send all
submissions to ACResolution's Managing Editor, Mark Sawchuk, at
msawchuk@ACRnet.org, accompanied by your complete name, contact
information, and primary professional title.

We accept submissions to other departments of the magazine on a rolling
basis. Please consider submitting to any of the following departments.

Balancing Act is a one-page department focusing on members who are
committed to developing themselves as whole persons, both inside and
outside the workplace. Articles of 500 to 600 words and photos should
highlight an after-hours activity or hobby that enables you to feel
centered and grounded outside of your busy life as an ADR professional.
Please tell us about how this activity or hobby revitalizes you, helps you
achieve balance in your personal life, feeds your intellect, and nurtures
your soul. If you would like to present an idea for Balancing Act, please
send us a short paragraph describing your hobby. If selected, we will then
ask you to write a full page.

Members in the News, a subsection of the magazine's In Brief section, is
the place for you to update your fellow ACR members on recent developments
in your life and professional career. Found an exciting new job in the
field? Appointed to a new position? Received an award? Write and tell us
about it! Submissions should be no longer than 50 - 100 words, should be
accompanied by a photo in JPEG or TIFF format, scanned at 300 dpi (you may
send a photo hard copy if an electronic version is not available), and
should note your ACR membership status and history. Please note that we can
only include news about you once per volume (4 issues). Submissions
received in February will go into the Spring issue (May 2004) of the
magazine.

The Learning Matters department features short articles that discuss
various aspects of conflict resolution education in schools, colleges, and
other environments. If you have an experience to share, please let us know.

Diversity Practices: This column highlights innovative, practical
strategies for training conflict resolution professionals in specific
cross-cultural and diversity skills; describes model approaches to
resolving complex disputes in various U.S. subcultures and abroad; and
presents case studies of programs and interventions in the field of
diversity and conflict resolution. (For this department only, send
submissions to Contributing Editor Dr. Benjamin Reese at
reesources1@aol.com.)

Up Close: This department is a first-person account describing some aspect
of conflict resolution practice. It is the place to offer personal opinions
or take positions on issues, and can be written in a less formal style than
other articles in the magazine.

World Views on ADR: This department features articles on conflict
resolution in other countries, or efforts to promote international conflict
resolution between countries or warring groups. Articles for this
department are usually written by conflict resolution practitioners who
live and work outside the United States. U.S. residents who have done
training or consultation in other countries are also encouraged to submit
articles for this department.

ACR's Conference Calendar is a free listing of professional conferences of
interest to the alternative dispute resolution field/community. Please note
that we cannot post announcements of training programs or workshops offered
by for-profit organizations. Only bona-fide conferences, with concurrent
workshops and multiple presenters, will qualify for the listing. Learning
opportunities that are offered free of charge can also be listed here.

[5] ACR Sections Update
================================================

ACR'S FAMILY SECTION

The Family Section now has 2,232 members.

The Section's first Telephone Talk, "Breaking Impasse," took place on
Tuesday, January 27th. The hour-long program was led by former AFM
president, founding ACR Board Director and longtime mediator Nina
Meierding. More than 100 members participated in the event. Upcoming
Telephone Talk events include Lee Borden speaking on "Financial Aspects of
Divorce" and Bernie Mayer on "Beyond Neutral," the topic of his new book,
due to be published in May.

A new Divorce Mediation Training Program has been ACR-approved. Taught by
former AFM Executive Director, Erika Gray, the program is sponsored by
Northwestern University's School of Continuing Education.

The Diversity Committee is promoting the Van Dalan Wetters scholarship and
seeking additional funding from members or reduced training fees from ACR
trainers for winners of this scholarship. Anyone interested in promoting
diversity among mediators through support of this scholarship should
contact Marya Kolman at marya_kolman@fccourts.org.

ACR'S INTERNATIONAL SECTION

The Spanish Pilot Program for the 2004 ACR Conference in Sacramento is
rapidly moving forward. More than a dozen proposals in Spanish or requests
to present in Spanish were submitted through the 2004 Conference call for
proposals. The Spanish Pilot Program is working on finding a way to
provide volunteer interpreters for the conference. If you are bilingual
with good interpretation experience and interested in volunteering to
provide simultaneous interpretation for the conference in exchange for some
fee reductions (details yet to be determined), please contact Ian Walke at
walke@sierratel.com.

The conference program committee received 87 proposals identified as
international topics or of interest to international members. The
International Section's Bilingual Committee and its member proposal
reviewers worked very hard with the Section Co-Chairs to assess all of
these proposals and submit feedback to the conference program committee.
The International Section Co-Chairs and Section Advisory Committee are
looking forward to a wonderful conference in Sacramento that highlights a
broad range of international topics and regions and fully supports ACR's
Hispanic colleagues.

WORKPLACE SECTION ANNOUNCES NEXT CONFERENCE CALL
February 17, Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. EST/ 9:00 a.m. PST.

Join the Workplace Section for an important call on February 17, 2004 at
noon EST / 9:00 a.m. PST. You may call-in from anywhere, and the cost is
only your long-distance charges for a 55-minute telephone call. This call
is designed to solicit your ideas and suggestions on involving the
Workplace Section and its members with more corporations and other
organizations. How can the Workplace Section and its members add value to
other groups, other professionals and other organizations? How can we
partner with others?

For example, conflict resolution education and other services are
increasingly needed in other organizations. Yet, many groups who are not
conflict resolution professionals are successfully marketing conflict
resolution products and services to these organizations. How can ACR and
the Workplace Section better serve the market and offer its expertise in
the conflict resolution field? There are opportunities for other
professionals to derive benefit from being members of ACR. How can ACR
connect with them so they know of this opportunity?

Join the Workplace Section leadership to explore and identify specific
strategies to move forward on this issue.

To participate in the discussion, e-mail Stephen Kotev at skotev@ACRnet.org
by February 13, 2004. In your e-mail, please include your full name,
organization name, title, location, e-mail address and phone number (unless
you request otherwise, your contact information will be shared with others
on the call) and any questions or concerns you would like to address during
the call. You will receive the dial-in number by e-mail to confirm your
participation in the call. The Workplace Section looks forward to having
you on the call.

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing
himself. -- Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy

A handful of pine-seed will cover mountains with the green majesty of a
forest. I too will set my face to the wind and throw my handful of seed on
high. -- Fiona MacLeod

If everyone howled at every injustice, every act of barbarism, every act of
unkindness, then we would be taking the first step towards a real humanity.
-- Nelson DeMille

You are quite right in calling for negotiation. Indeed, this is the very
purpose of direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a
crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly
refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. -- Martin Luther
King, Jr., to the eight fellow clergymen who opposed the civil rights
action, "Letter from Birmingham Jail," Why We Can't Wait, 1963
