[4] ACR Publications Update
================================================

CONFLICT RESOLUTION QUARTERLY SUBMISSIONS

Conflict Resolution Quarterly is ACR’s quarterly academic journal. Its mission is to publish scholarship on relationships between theory, research, and practice in the conflict management and dispute resolution field to promote more effective professional applications. Consider submitting any of the following kinds of work:

State-of-the-art articles

State-of-the-art articles provide a comprehensive reporting of current literature on a specific topic and a critique of that theory and research in terms of how well it informs conflict practice.

Implications for Practice Commentary Section

Readers may submit “practice implications comments” on previously published articles in which they discuss how previously published articles have better informed them in terms of practice.

Book Reviews

We accept reviews of current books on conflict management and dispute resolution. Preference is given to book review essays that review three or more books in a related topic area in light of current scholarship in that area.

Training and Education Notes

These are short articles focusing on the practice of dispute resolution training, studies of dispute resolution training, or reviews of curricula or software programs for dispute resolution training.

Articles should be directed to a multidisciplinary audience and be as readable and practical as possible. Submissions and questions regarding editorial matters should be sent to Tricia S. Jones, Editor, Conflict Resolution Quarterly, Dept. of Psychological Studies, College of Education, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122. You may also e-mail Tricia at tsjones@astro.temple.edu.

ACRESOLUTION SUBMISSIONS

The Fall 2003 issue of ACResolution magazine was recently mailed to members. Planning is now underway for next year’s issues. Anyone wishing to submit a feature article for the Summer 2004 issue, whose theme will be Restorative and Criminal Justice, should submit a short abstract or proposal no later than March 1, 2004. Please send all submissions to ACResolution's Managing Editor, Mark Sawchuk, at msawchuk@ACRnet.org, accompanied by your complete name, contact information, and primary professional title.

We accept submissions to other departments of the magazine on a rolling basis. Please consider submitting to any of the following departments.

Members in the News

Members in the News, a subsection of the magazine's In Brief section, is the place for you to update your fellow ACR members on recent developments in your life and professional career. Found an exciting new job in the field? Appointed to a new position? Received an award? Write and tell us about it! Submissions should be no longer than 50 - 100 words, should be accompanied by a photo in JPEG or TIFF format, scanned at 300 dpi (you may send a photo hard copy if an electronic version is not available), and should note your ACR membership status and history. Please note that we can only include news about you once per volume (4 issues). Submissions received in December will go into the Winter issue (February 2004) of the magazine.

Learning Matters

We are always looking for short articles that discuss various aspects of conflict resolution education in schools, colleges, and other environments. If you have an experience to share, please let us know.

Diversity Practices

This section of the magazine is devoted to best practices in diversity and conflict resolution and highlights innovative strategies for effectively responding to conflict within our increasingly diverse community. (For this department only, send submissions to Contributing Editor Dr. Benjamin Reese at reesources1@aol.com.)

WORKPLACE SECTION ANNOUNCES NEXT CONFERENCE CALL: December 16, Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. EST

Please join the Workplace Section to find out how to use the Conflict Dynamics Profile® in the workplace to assist people in managing conflict more effectively. You don't have to be a Workplace Section member or even an ACR member to join the call, just someone interested in this workplace topic.

The Conflict Dynamics Profile® (CDP) is a new psychological assessment instrument dealing with workplace conflict. It measures how people behave when faced with conflict so they can identify behaviors that need improvement. The conference call presentation will include a brief overview of the theory underlying the CDP, a description of the instrument and its applications, and an overview of research tying conflict behaviors and leadership effectiveness. There will also be opportunities for questions and discussion.

Join Rita Callahan, Co-Chair of the ACR Workplace Section, and presenter Craig Runde, Director of New Program Development for the Leadership Development Institute at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, where he heads up the Conflict Dynamics Profile.

To participate, e-mail Stephen Kotev at skotev@ACRnet.org by December 12, 2003. In your e-mail, please include your full name, organization name, title, location, e-mail address and phone number (unless you request otherwise, your contact information will be shared with others on the call) and any questions or concerns you would like Mr. Runde to address. You will receive the dial-in number by e-mail to confirm your participation. We look forward to having you on the call.

Call details: Tuesday, December 16, 2003, 12:00 p.m. (noon) EST/9:00 a.m. PST. You may call in from anywhere, and the cost is only your long-distance charge for a 55-minute telephone call.

[7] Creative Problem Solver's Handbook for Negotiators and Mediators: Call for Submissions
================================================

OPEN INVITATION TO SHARE CREATIVE MEDIATION TECHNIQUES WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES!

From: John W. (Jack) Cooley, Member, ACR and ABA Section of Dispute Resolution

The Association for Conflict Resolution and the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution are jointly collecting data to be used in publishing a CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVER'S HANDBOOK FOR NEGOTIATORS AND MEDIATORS. We are politely requesting that you take a few moments to provide information requested in the accompanying questionnaire in order to share a creative technique or two that you have used or have seen used to achieve successful results in mediation and/or negotiation. You will receive acknowledgment for your submission in the publication. Please feel free to share this invitation and data collection form with anyone, lawyer or nonlawyer, who might be willing to share some creative techniques with us. The submission deadline is December 15, 2003.

The handbook is intended to serve as an idea generator that can be used before, during, and/or after a mediation or negotiation session to enhance interest satisfaction, to break or circumvent impasses, and/or to help foster issue resolution and overall agreement. The creative techniques can range from simple (substituting goods for dollars, changing a label or title, donating to a charity) to more involved procedures.

It is envisioned that the handbook will be topically indexed in multiple ways (by dispute subject matter, stage of process, number and configuration of parties, emotion-handling situations, etc.) to permit quick access to a helpful, creative idea or technique. Therefore, it is important to complete all sections of the accompanying short form.

You may be as detailed as you like in describing the dispute, the creative technique, and how to apply it. If you wish, you may submit multiple forms describing different creative techniques. Maintaining the anonymity of parties and their counsel is paramount.

The form allows you to elect attribution for the creative technique that you submit. If you want to be credited by name in the handbook, please indicate so in your response and provide any appropriate contact information as you want it to appear in the handbook.

As the editor of the book, I thank you in advance for sharing information which will be helpful to your professional colleagues and which will foster the goals and objectives of alternative dispute resolution nationally and internationally.

CREATIVE TECHNIQUES DATA COLLECTION FORM

Copy the form below (or in an e-mail, simply type numbers 1-14 vertically) and provide the corresponding information requested in the 14 topics listed below. If you have no information to provide on a particular topic, please insert "N/A" -- not applicable.
