TASK FORCE ON MEDIATOR CERTIFICATION RELEASES INITIAL REPORT FOR MEMBER FEEDBACK
ACR's Task Force on Mediator Certification has developed an initial report and recommendations on an ACR certification process. This process will require more training and experience than traditional 40-hour minimum training programs, but less than that required by the Advanced Practitioner membership category. To read the initial report and offer your feedback to the Task Force, click here: http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/CertTF2003.

ADVANCED PRACTITIONER WORKGROUP SOLICITS MEMBER INPUT ON ITS REPORT
In 2002, the ACR Board appointed a Workgroup to develop standard criteria for ACR's "Advanced Mediation Practitioner" (AMP) membership category. As proposed, AMP membership status would be conferred only through those ACR Sections that have elected to establish such a membership category and have received approval from the ACR Board to implement it. The Advanced Practitioner Workgroup (APW) has developed a set of proposed criteria for ACR’s Advanced Mediation Practitioner membership category. Prior to formal submission for Board action, the APW invites ACR member review and comment. To do so, click here: http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/APWR2003.

ACR COMMENTS ON THE FMCS PROPOSED ROSTER OF NEUTRALS
In spring 2003, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) issued proposed regulations to create a national roster of workplace mediators. The FMCS proposal is a significant development in the workplace ADR field and will directly affect the interests of ACR members. In June, members of the Workplace Section Public Policy Committee and the ACR Legislative/Public Policy Committee drafted comments for the FMCS concerning its proposed roster. The ACR Board approved the comments at its June 2003 meeting. To read the ACR comments sent to the FMCS, click here: http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/FMCS-Access.

[2] ACR Receives Conflict Resolution Education Grant
================================================

The Association for Conflict Resolution has received a $50,000 grant from the Compton Foundation to improve and expand conflict resolution education in schools. Conflict resolution education has been shown to reduce violence and anti-social and intolerant behavior, create improved environments for learning, and enhance children's academic achievement. The grant to ACR will help build support for this important educational experience at both the K-12 and higher education levels. To read the full press release, go to the ACR Web site: http://www.acresolution.org.

"The World of Conflict Resolution: A Mosaic of Possibilities"
October 15-18, 2003
Orlando, Florida

ACR is pleased to announce that former senator George J. Mitchell will present the closing keynote address at the 2003 ACR Annual Conference. Senator Mitchell (D-Maine) served for 15 years in the U.S. Senate and was the Majority Leader from 1985-1995. In the mid 1990s, Mitchell led the Clinton Administration's successful negotiations to achieve a peaceful political settlement in Northern Ireland and was nominated for the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in this effort. He currently chairs the Ethics Committee of the U.S. Olympic Committee and serves on the National Healthcare Commission and the International Crisis Group. Mitchell's early experience as a lawyer and judge, followed by his long and successful career in national and international diplomacy, make him a particularly appropriate speaker for an audience of conflict resolvers.

REPORT ON THE ACR FAMILY SECTION CONFERENCE
"A Family Affair: Making Room at the Table"
July 10-13, 2003
Hyatt Hotel, Denver, Colorado

The 2003 Family Section Conference, held last month in Denver, Colorado, was indeed "A Family Affair" that "Made Room at the Table" for a wide variety of perspectives and practice modalities. It was a time to visit with old friends and welcome many professionals attending their first Family Section Conference. Attendees commented repeatedly about the excellence and usefulness of presentations and the friendliness of the group. The Section's Membership Committee paired up new and experienced members as part of the Friends program that gives members an opportunity to expand their learning from each other.

Members also learned more about attaining Advanced Practitioner status and about the process for receiving approval for family mediation training programs. The tradition of fun continued with engaging evening entertainment, featuring exhibitions by prize-winning ballroom dancers, new material from the famous "Chip and Don" mediation bloopers videos, and rock 'n' roll lyrics from Christy Coates. Three new Advisory Council members, Clarence Cramer, Julie Denny, and Christy Cumberlander Walker, were elected during the conference and joined continuing Council members for a post-conference meeting to begin planning for the next Family Section Conference. Stay tuned and join us for the next gathering!

ACRESOLUTION SUBMISSIONS

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Members in the News, a subsection of the magazine's In Brief section, is the place for you to update your fellow ACR members on recent developments in your life and professional career. Found a new job in the field? Appointed to a new position? Received an award? Write and tell us about it! Submissions should be no longer than 50 - 100 words, should be accompanied by a photo in JPEG or TIFF format, scanned at 300 dpi (you may send a photo hard copy if an electronic version is not available), and should note your ACR membership status and history. Please note that we can only include news about you once per volume (4 issues). Submissions received in August will go into the Fall issue of the magazine, which mails in November.

BALANCING ACT
Balancing Act is a one-page department in the magazine focusing on members who are committed to developing themselves as whole persons, both inside and outside the workplace. Submissions of 500 to 600 words and photos should highlight an after-hours activity or hobby that enables you to feel centered and grounded outside of your busy life as an ADR professional. Please tell us about how this activity or hobby revitalizes you, helps you achieve balance in your personal life, feeds your intellect, and nurtures your soul. If you would like to present an idea for Balancing Act, please send us a short paragraph describing your hobby. If selected, we will then ask you to write a full page.

LEARNING MATTERS
We are always looking for short articles that discuss various aspects of conflict resolution education in schools, colleges, and other environments. If you have an experience to share, please let us know.

DIVERSITY PRACTICES
This section of the magazine is devoted to best practices in diversity and conflict resolution and highlights innovative strategies for effectively responding to conflict within our increasingly diverse community. (For this department only, send submissions to Contributing Editor Dr. Benjamin Reese at reesources1@aol.com.)

CONFERENCE CALENDAR
Please let us know about any upcoming conferences in the field. We do not list trainings in this section, but we do inform our readers about any national or international organizations that are holding conferences related to ADR that are open to the general public.

Please send all submissions to ACResolution's Managing Editor, Mark Sawchuk, at msawchuk@acresolution.org, accompanied by your complete name, contact information, and primary professional title.

ACR is updating its roster of mentors for this year’s Annual Conference in Orlando. If you would like to be part of our One-to-One program, just click http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/mentoring and fill in your information. ACR’s conference mentors meet with a mentee for a one-time consultation to offer advice, provide coaching, or help brainstorm next steps. Once you have filled out your information, and the type of consultation for which you would be available, we will match you up with a mentee. It’s a wonderful way to give back, and to become better known in the profession.

LOOKING FOR A PERSONAL CONSULTATION WITH A CONFLICT RESOLUTION PROFESSIONAL? TALK TO A MENTOR AT THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE
If you’re coming to the ACR Annual Conference in Orlando October 15-18, don’t miss this opportunity sign up for ACR’s One-to-One Mentoring Program: ask about troublesome cases, get coaching, find out how to get started or what to do after you finish training, ask questions about how to build a career. Mentoring is available for people at all levels of experience and in all areas of practice. ACR Mentors can help people new in the field who are looking for areas of entry as well as experienced practitioners who are seeking to hone their skills or develop a career. They have experience, inside information and real-world tips not found in textbooks.

To participate in the One-to-One Program, click http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/mentoring and fill in your information. We will connect you with a mentor so that you can arrange a meeting at the annual conference. ORGANIZATIONAL CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SECTION NEWS
The Organizational Conflict Management (OCM) Section recently held two Section-wide conference calls. In those calls, Section leadership invited members to provide ideas and comments on the Section’s mission, vision, and annual goals, and to discuss opportunities for strengthening the Section, as proposed in its 2003 Strategic Action Plan. The tone and content of the calls were constructive and enthusiastic, confirming strong support for the Section mission, vision, and goals, while raising questions that led to the clarification of these statements’ language. An additional conference call is planned for September.

The Section is also planning to survey its members, seeking to identify ways in which the Section can more effectively meet their needs. Survey questions will include items such as, "What are effective ways to involve and inform our members?" and "How can we better address and meet member needs?" Section leaders hope that by involving members in this way, the Section will be better able to devote its resources to the most effective means of communication and member involvement.

Mark our upcoming OCM Section pre-conference in your calendars! This learning event and Section meeting will be held on Wednesday October 15 at the ACR Annual Conference in Orlando.

SPIRITUALITY SECTION: NEW LEADERSHIP AND "SACRED SPACE" AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The Spirituality Section has been delighted to have the opportunity to work with Rick Wingate, who came on board in March to replace Madge Woods. We look forward to working together to develop exciting projects for Section members this coming year! We also are pleased to welcome Linda Lazarus as our Section’s Web master. Linda has done a remarkable job in keeping our Web page exciting and up-to-date.

The Spirituality Section would like to invite all of the ACR members attending the Orlando conference to come to our “Sacred Space.” This year we will again be hosting a Labyrinth and a place to unwind. We want to thank Zena Zumeta and Michelle LeBaron for organizing this event. The Spirituality Section is honored to be a part of ACR and a resource for its members. We welcome any opportunity to work with any individual ACR member, Section, or Chapter in any way we can.

WORKPLACE SECTION NEWS: LABOR ARBITRATION/MEDIATION COMMITTEE and PUBLIC POLICY FORUM
Under the newleadership of Gary Hattal (FMCS), Jeremy Cohen (labor arbitrator & mediator) and Rick Reilly (formerly AAA Vice President and SPIDR President) the Labor Arbitration/Mediation Committee (LA/MC) has several goals. Initially the LA/MC is promoting registration for the October Labor Arbitrator Program in Orlando, held just prior to the ACR Conference. Interested individuals should apply now as the program is limited to 20 participants. You can register on the ACR Web site at http://www.acresolution.org.

Other primary goals of the Labor Arbitration/Mediation Committee include: find tangible and limited leadership roles for former SPIDR Presidents who are national arbitrators; recruit and retain new and advancing labor arbitrators and mediators; develop working liaisons with the NAA, IRRA, ABA/Labor ADR Committee, FMCS, NMB and SFLERP and creating several "practice areas," each headed by two co-chairs (labor arbitrator training, labor mediation and fact finding training, interest-based bargaining, ethics, legal developments and public policy, federal labor relations, career development, advanced practitioner designation (APD) and mediation of grievances). Contact any of the co-chairs with questions or suggestions: Hattal (ghattal@fmcs.gov) Cohen (jvcohen1936@yahoo.com) Reilly (rmreilly@rcn.com).

There will be a Workplace Public Policy Forum discussion at the ACR Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida in October 2003. The Forum will cover the FMCS's proposed roster of neutrals, ACR's official Comments to the FMCS, and other policy developments in the field. The Workplace Section's Public Policy Committee, with involvement from ACR's Legislative Public Policy Committee, developed ACR's official Comments on the FMCS' proposed roster.
