ACR’s THIRD ANNUAL CONFERENCE:
GEORGE MITCHELL TO DELIVER KEYNOTE ADDRESS
“The World of Conflict Resolution:
A Mosaic of Possibilities”
October 15-18, 2003
Orlando, Florida
ACR is pleased to announce that the
former senator George J. Mitchell will
present the keynote address at the 2003
ACR Annual Conference. Senator Mitchell
(D-Maine) served for 15 years in the
U.S. Senate and was the Majority Leader
from 1985-95. In the mid 1990s, Mitchell
led the Clinton Administration's successful
negotiations to achieve a peaceful political
settlement in Northern Ireland and was
nominated for the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize
for his role in this effort. He currently
chairs the Ethics Committee of the U.S.
Olympic Committee, serves on the National
Healthcare Commission and the International
Crisis Group, and is Co-Chairman of
the national commission investigating
the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Mitchell's early experience as a lawyer
and judge, followed by his long and
successful career in national and international
diplomacy, make him a particularly appropriate
speaker for an audience of conflict
resolvers.

ACRESOLUTION SUBMISSIONS
Members in the News
Members in the News, a subsection of
the magazine's In Brief section, is
the place for you to update your fellow
ACR members on recent developments in
your life and professional career. Found
a new job in the field? Appointed to
a new position? Received an award? Write
and tell us about it! Submissions should
be no longer than 50 - 100 words, should
be accompanied by a photo in JPEG or
TIFF format, scanned at 300 dpi (you
may send a photo hard copy if an electronic
version is not available), and should
note your ACR membership status and
history. Please note that we can only
include news about you once per volume
(4 issues).
Balancing Act
Balancing Act is a one-page department
in the magazine focusing on members
who are committed to developing themselves
as whole persons, both inside and outside
the workplace. Articles of 500 to 600
words highlight an after-hours activity
or hobby that enables you to feel centered
and grounded outside of your busy life
as an ADR professional. Please tell
us about how this activity or hobby
revitalizes you, helps you achieve balance
in your personal life, feeds your intellect,
and nurtures your soul. If you would
like to present an idea for Balancing
Act, please send us a short paragraph
describing your hobby. If selected,
we will then ask you to write a full
page and submit a photo to run with
the article.
Learning Matters
We are always looking for short articles
that discuss various aspects of conflict
resolution education in schools and
colleges. If you have an experience
to share, please let us know.
Diversity Practices
This section of the magazine is devoted
to best practices in diversity and conflict
resolution and highlights innovative
strategies for effectively responding
to conflict within our increasingly
diverse community. (For this department
only, send submissions to Contributing
Editor Dr. Benjamin Reese at reesources1@aol.com.)
Conference Calendar
Please let us know about any upcoming
conferences in the field. We do not
list trainings in this section, but
we do inform our readers about any national
or international organizations that
are holding conferences related to ADR.
Please send all submissions to ACResolution's
Managing Editor, Mark Sawchuk, at msawchuk@acresolution.org,
accompanied by your complete name, contact
information, and primary professional

[6] ACR Sections Update: Section Elections
and News
================================================
SECTION ELECTIONS – GET READY
TO NOMINATE!
It’s time to begin thinking about
new officers for your Section. Your
Section Chairs have been busy drafting
the qualifications for the positions
that need to be filled next year, and
will be contacting you by e-mail during
the week of June 23rd. During that week,
you will receive an e-mail listing the
positions that open in your Section,
together with the qualifications for
each position, and an invitation to
nominate yourself or anyone else you
believe is qualified. Look for the e-mail
on during the week of June 23rd.
COURT SECTION NEWS
On April 28 and 29, the Court Section
of ACR joined the Maryland Mediation
and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO)
and the Policy Consensus Initiative
(PCI) in co-sponsoring an East Coast
Court ADR Administrators Meeting in
Elkridge, MD. Representatives from 15
states and the District of Columbia
attended the meeting. It provided a
wonderful opportunity for informal networking
and sharing of information/ideas on
issues including confidentiality, evaluation,
funding, quality assurance, and the
future of court-annexed ADR. Financial
support provided by the Hewlett Foundation
and the ACR Court Section made participation
possible for many administrators who
are dealing with budget cuts and travel
restrictions and might otherwise have
not been able to attend. The dialogues
begun at this conference will continue
at a half-day Court ADR meeting the
day before the ACR Annual Conference
in Orlando.
For more information, contact Geetha
Ravindra at gravindra@courts.state.va.us
or David Michael at michaeld@DCSC.GOV.

WORKPLACE SECTION NEWS
ACR's Workplace Section extends an invitation
to join others interested in Workplace
ADR (you don't have to be a Section
member, just interested in Workplace
ADR) in a special, timely and unique
teleconference with Peggy McNeive, Federal
Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS)
Acting Director of the Access to Neutrals
Initiative. She will discuss the initiative
in a special conference call at noon
EST on June 13. The FMCS is experiencing
such rapid growth in demand for its
mediation and related alternative dispute
resolution services that it may soon
exceed the Agency's capacity to provide
these services through its in-house
staff of 200 professional mediators.
To help meet this need, the FMCS is
proposing a new regulation to establish
an Access to Neutrals Initiative. The
main function of the Access to Neutrals
Initiative is to provide a Registry
of Neutrals--a list of individual dispute
resolution providers who have documented
their qualifications according to criteria
outlined in the regulation in the categories
of ADR experience, ADR education/training,
substantive education in the content
area and experience in the content area.
The proposed Access to Neutrals Initiative
also includes informational, ethical
and continuing education requirements
for individuals on the Registry of Neutrals
as well as a consumer complaint process.
To understand more about this Initiative
and how to submit written comments before
the July 7 comment deadline, join Peggy
McNeive in this unique opportunity.
Join the Workplace Section Co-Chairs
and Peggy McNeive on Friday, June 13,
2003 at noon EDT/ 9:00 a.m. PDT. You
may call in from anywhere, and the cost
is only your long-distance charges for
a 55-minute telephone call. To participate,
e-mail Stephen Kotev at skotev@acresolution.org
by June 11. In your e-mail, please include
your full name, organization name, title,
location, email address and phone number
(unless you request otherwise, your
contact information will be shared with
others on the call) and any questions
or concerns you would like Ms. McNeive
to address during the call. You will
receive the dial-in number by e-mail
to confirm your participation in the
call. We look forward to hearing you
on the call.
