[1] 2001 ACR Conference Update
=========================
Annual Conference Happening as Scheduled!

In light of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, ACR believes it is critical for the conflict resolution community to come together to support one another. Therefore, the ACR conference will be held as planned, in Toronto, Canada, October 10-13, 2001. The conference schedule will include several blocks of time for facilitated dialogue about the terrorist attacks, and about our responses to these events -- as human beings and as people committed to the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Because of the timing of the attacks, ACR has extended the "second chance" registration until Friday, September 21. Be sure to register by September 21 to take advantage of the "second chance" registration rate. Also, if you have not booked your room at the Sheraton, rooms in the ACR block are filling up fast! Please call 416-947-4955, ext. 4440 to reserve your room. We look forward to welcoming you to Toronto for ACR's launch event! The 2001 Conference Brochure and registration information is now online at: www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/conferences

[2] Publications Update -- ACResolution Call for Submissions
=========================

We are eager to receive member contributions to ACR’s new organizational magazine, ACResolution, which will launch in October. The deadline for submissions to the January 2002 issue is October 5.

We welcome your contributions to the following departments:

Balancing Act focuses on members who are committed to ‘walking the talk’ and developing themselves as whole persons, both inside and outside the workplace. Submissions of 150-250 words and photos should highlight an after-hours activity or hobby that enables you to feel centered and grounded outside of your busy life as a conflict resolver. Please tell us about how this activity or hobby revitalizes you, helps you achieve balance in your personal life, feeds your intellect, and nurtures your soul.

What Would You Do? Ethical dilemmas? Seemingly intractable conflicts? Trouble “walking the talk” with colleagues, partners, family members? Your own biases and expectations getting in the way? Please describe (in 250 words or less) an experience that raised a question for you regarding effective conflict resolution practice. Senior practitioners in the field will respond to your queries with suggestions and advice.

Voices is a one-page collection of quotations about conflict resolution and peacemaking that relate to a particular issue’s theme. (The theme of the January 2002 issue is the changing face of the family and the impact on conflict resolution theory and practice.) Please send us quotes related to our field that you find compelling and educative.

Letters to the Editor are both welcome and encouraged as a means of enhancing the dialogue between ACResolution and its readers. (ACResolution reserves the right to edit letters for space.) If an article or column encourages or frustrates you, we want to hear about it!

General interest columns may include: Section and Chapter news, members in the news (awards, personnel moves, etc.), and calendar information (conferences and other activities or events related to conflict resolution).
National and Regional Legislative and Public Policy Updates. Please help us raise member awareness by submitting updates and highlights of conflict resolution-related legislative and public policy news found in the local, regional, and national media.
[Note: Feature articles for the January 2002 issue have already been assigned.]
All submissions should be e-mailed with complete contact information to ACR Publications Manager Susan Williams at swilliams@acresolution.org.
Submissions may also be sent on an IBM-compatible disk to Publications Manager, ACR, 1527 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, Third Floor, Washington, DC 20036. Please note that ACR reserves the right not to publish any submission for any reason, and that submissions accepted for publication may be edited for space and conformity to accepted standards of language usage, grammar, and punctuation.

[3] Section Conferences
=========================

Make your plans now to attend the ACR Organizational Conflict Management Section Conference at the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, November 29-December 1, 2001. The conference program has been designed to offer attendees numerous opportunities for networking, idea exchanges, theory discussion, and an in-depth look at issues involving "Open Space Technology." Located in Midtown Atlanta, the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel provides easy access to restaurants, galleries, and theaters. Please plan on joining us! For more information and a copy of the brochure, please visit the ACR Web site and click on the "conferences and programs" icon, or contact Erin Weiss in the ACR Conferences & Programs Department at 202-667-9700, ext. 210, or via e-mail at eweiss@acresolution.org

The ACR Family Section Conference, "Many Faces of Family Mediation", will be held in Savannah, Georgia February 28-March 2, 2002. We are pleased to announce that Carla Garrity and Mitch Barris, authors of "Children of Divorce," "Caught in the Middle," and the recent publication "Working with High-Conflict Families in Divorce - A Guide for Professionals," will offer the keynote address. In addition, Mitch and Carla will present an advanced workshop on working with children in high conflict situations.
We are excited about the events planned, as well as all the different possibilities for workshops. Mock mediations with expert mediators will not only provide an opportunity to observe master mediators at work, but also encourage an interactive format to find out why mediators do what they do when they do it. The conference brochure will be available online at www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/conferences and in hard copy by early December. We look forward to seeing all interested family mediators in Savannah early next year!

[6] Reader Feedback
=========================

We are interested in getting your feedback. What do you think of our new Web site? What kind of features and/or content would you like to see on the Web site? How can we make the Web site better serve you, our members?

Feedback from ACR Update includes Carl R. Hazen, who wrote:

"Patience Rewarded! The new Web site was worth the wait. The general appearance, the format and the accessibility of information evidence the excellence we had expected from the merger but were apprehensive, nonetheless. By offering timely information, the "updates" will be a valuable addition to the entire profession. Keep up the great beginning."

Brigitte Schmidt Bell wrote:

"I like the new web site, guys! I've added it to Favorites so I can check on you regularly! "

Please send your feedback by email to feedback@acresolution.org.

We will include reader feedback in future online ACR Updates.

[7] Featured Article
=========================

We are committed to educating our members and the general public about conflict resolution. In each ACR Update, we will feature a new article that we think will be of value to our members.

This week, our featured article is:

"Cultural Issues in Mediation - A Practical Guide to Individualist and Collectivist Paradigms" by Walter A. Wright

Every mediation has a unique character influenced by the cultural perspectives of its participants. Differences in perspectives may impede an agreement if the participants' views diverge on such fundamental issues as individual autonomy and group interdependence. When issues based on
individual rights or strong group identification arise in a mediation, a mediator's awareness of individualist and collectivist paradigms can help surmount such cultural barriers to an agreement.

[9] Quotes
=========================

"If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies." -- Moshe Dayan

"If the question of the "Other" is the point of every revolution, even war, is it naive to believe in a place within our own evolving state, even the state of Utah, where we can recognize "Other" as ourselves?" -- Terry Tempest Williams, Leap

"No culture has yet solved the dilemma each has faced with the growth of the conscious mind: how to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in all life, when one finds darkness not only in one's own culture but within oneself. If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of a leaning into the light." -- Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams
