SAVE THE DATE: ACR'S THIRD ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The World of Conflict Resolution: A
Mosaic of Possibilities
October 15-18, 2003
Orlando, Florida USA
Workshops will focus on issues such
as: What are the best practices in conflict
resolution? What do we -- as conflict
resolvers -- want our field to become?
What are the opportunities and challenges?
What are the threats? What are the creative
uses and innovative practices of conflict
resolution? How does youth fit into
the field? Please plan to join us in
Orlando in October for this exciting
conference!

ACR’S ENVIRONMENTAL/ PUBLIC POLICY
SECTION CONFERENCE
Moving Beyond Our Comfort Zone: Exploring
the Edges of Our Field
April 24 - 26, 2003
Radisson Barcelo Hotel, Washington,
D.C.
The Environmental/Public Policy Section
invites you to join your colleagues
for an exciting conference that will
focus on urban public policy conflicts,
different and emerging modes of practice,
and urban environmental justice issues
paired with some dancing and great music.
We want to especially extend an invitation
to those practitioners who might define
themselves as being on the edge of our
field. The Section conference is an
opportunity to broaden our collegial
networks, understand different arenas
of practice, and perhaps attract new
members to ACR. Brochures and registration
information will be available in late
March. We look forward to seeing you
in April!

ACR INTERNATIONAL SECTION MEETING: CALL
FOR PAPERS
"Global Access to Conflict Resolution,
Ethics, Partnerships and Practice"
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA, MAY 7, 2003
ACR's International Section welcomes
proposals for paper presentations at
its first mid-year Section Meeting,
to be held May 7, 2003 in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, prior to the 4th International
Conference of the World Mediation Forum.
ACR president Nancy E. Peace will speak
at the event.
The International Section mid-year
meeting will provide a forum for attendees
to meet and engage in in-depth dialogue
on a range of international conflict
resolution topics, including new developments
in the field. It also will help conflict
resolution professionals develop a better
understanding of both the status of
conflict resolution in different countries
and regions of the world, and how the
culture of conflict resolution can/needs
to be expanded and empowered in each
country. For information on paper topics
and submission guidelines, please visit
the ACR Web site at http://www.acresolution.org.
If you would like to be included in
the International Section gathering
but are not a member of the Section,
you can sign up for Section membership
by contacting Cherise Alley, ACR's Membership
Development Coordinator, at calley@acresolution.org
or 202-667-9700 x 245, or join the Section
via the Member Center on the ACR Web
site: http://www.acresolution.org. For
more information about the Section,
please contact co-chairs Maria Rosa
Cattaneo at mariarcattaneo@arnet.com.ar

[3] Memorial Professorship: Donald T.
Weckstein
================================================
ACR ENCOURAGES MEMBERS TO APPLY FOR
/ DONATE TO THE DONALD WECKSTEIN MEMORIAL
PROFESSORSHIP
The University of San Diego School
of Law has established an endowed chair,
the Donald Weckstein Memorial Professorship,
in honor of professor Donald T. Weckstein,
a local, regional and national leader
in the fields of professional responsibility,
alternative dispute resolution, and
labor / employment law. Professor Weckstein,
who died in the summer of 2002, served
on the boards and major committees of
many dispute resolution organizations,
including the Society of Professionals
in Dispute Resolution, one of ACR’s
founding organizations. The endowment
fund will support the following activities
carried out under the aegis of the professorship:
Support for one or more visiting faculty,
either from the dispute resolution/legal
profession or from law school faculty,
or a combination of both, to come to
USD School of Law to teach in the areas
of legal ethics, alternative dispute
resolution or labor/employment law,
Support for conferences and other professional
meetings in these subject-matter areas
to bring together practitioners and
scholars to work on issues at the intersection
of legal and dispute resolution practice
and theory to help to improve these
professions through applied research
and dissemination of research analyses
and conclusions to the respective communities.
Members interested in applying for
the professorship, nominating someone
they believe is deserving or qualified,
or interested in making a contribution
to the endowment fund can find out more
on the University of San Diego's website
at:
http://www.sandiego.edu/usdlaw/alum_weckstein.html.

[4] ACR Chapters Update
================================================
LEARN MORE ABOUT ACR CHAPTERS
Are you interested in becoming involved
with ACR in your geographic area? ACR
has dynamic regional Chapters, which
provide members in common geographical
regions with a unique opportunity to
meet face-to-face and attend professional
development programs and activities.
In the Chapters, conflict resolution
professionals share ideas and best practices,
and make connections throughout their
region.
For more information on joining ACR
Chapters -- or starting one in your
area -- please contact Amanda Andere,
ACR's Chapters and Development Coordinator,
at aandere@acresolution.org, or visit
our Web site: http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/chapters.

[5] ACR Sections Update
================================================
CRISIS NEGOTIATION SECTION: GOT A PROBLEM?
The Crisis Negotiation Section now
offers a "Crisis Negotiation Help
Line" to its members. If you would
like to join the Crisis Negotiation
Section to take advantage of this service,
please contact Cherise Alley, Membership
Development Coordinator, at calley@acresolution.org
or 202-667-9700, x 245, or join the
Section via the Member Center on the
ACR Web site: http://www.acresolution.org.
Because conflict resolution professionals
typically are trained in how to resolve
conflict under conditions that are free
from threat and violence, they often feel
unprepared if that violence-free boundary
is crossed. Dr. Mitchell R. Hammer and another
ACR member, Co-chairs of the Crisis Negotiation
Section, are available to offer strategies
and consultation to conflict resolution
professionals who believe this violence-free
zone may be crossed in the immediate future,
or who need immediate advice on a current
situation. They also are available to discuss
members’ concerns in such areas as:
Assessment: How can we avoid overreacting
or underreacting to threat and violence
potential? How can we identify indicators
of suicide potential?
Proactive Approaches: What steps do
we take to insure safety when conditions
of threat or violence arise? What proactive
strategies should be used if a client
becomes so angry that we fear for our
own safety?
Reactive Strategies: How do we respond
to a client whom we believe is suicidal?
What can be done during a mediation
session if we suspect there is continuing
domestic violence between the parties?
If you are currently facing, or believe
you may face these types of situations
in the future, then the "Crisis
Negotiation Help Line" may be just
what you are looking for. Join us today!
--------------------------------------------------------------
ACR FAMILY SECTION: FRIENDS PROGRAM
The Family Section has implemented
a Friends Program, pairing a new Section
member with a current Section member
for orientation, mentoring, advice and
other activities. Section members should
look for the survey, which will be coming
in the mail, to ask if you would be
a Friend, or would like a Friend in
the Family Section. If you are interested,
please contact Zena Zumeta, Chair of
the Family Section Membership Committee
at mtci@igc.org. To join the Family
Section, please contact Cherise Alley,
Membership Development Coordinator,
at calley@acresolution.org or 202-667-9700,
x 245, or join the Section via the Member
Center on the ACR Web site: http://www.acresolution.org.

ACR RESEARCH SECTION: INVITATION TO
A DISPUTE RESOLUTION SYMPOSIUM
April 10-12, 2003
Penn State Dickinson School of Law
Carlisle, PA
The ACR Research Section invites you
to participate in a symposium, "Dispute
Resolution and Capitulation to the Routine:
Is There a Way Out." This working
meeting brings together an interdisciplinary
cross-section of highly experienced
scholars, teachers and practitioners,
and is co-sponsored by ACR, the Penn
State Dickinson School of Law, and the
Broad Field Project. The conference
will examine how a profession or field
that starts out with high aspirations
may slip into "routinization,"
drifting away from the practices that
embody those aspirations, and look at
examples of fields that have resisted
these pressures over a long period.
The meeting will begin Thursday evening,
April 10 and continue through Saturday
afternoon, April 12, 2003 at the Penn
State Dickinson School of Law campus
in Carlisle, Pennsylvania (approximately
a two-hour drive from Philadelphia,
Baltimore or Washington, D.C.). Attendance
will be limited in order to ensure a
thoroughly interactive discussion.
For more information about this conference,
please contact Chris Honeyman (honeyman@convenor.com)
or Bob Ackerman (bxa9@psu.edu). You
must be a member of ACR's Research Section
to attend this conference as an ACR
participant. To join ACR’s Research
Section, please contact Cherise Alley,
Membership Development Coordinator,
at calley@acresolution.org or 202-667-9700,
x 245, or join the Section via the Member
Center on the ACR Web site: http://www.acresolution.org.

the dial-in phone number. In your e-mail,
please include your full name, organization
