ACR's Third Annual Conference
The World of Conflict Resolution: A Mosaic of Possibilities
October 15-18, 2003
Orlando, Florida USA

The 2003 ACR Conference Planning Committee invites proposals that address
questions facing the field such as: What are the best practices in conflict
resolution? What do we -- as conflict resolvers -- want our field to
become? What are the opportunities and challenges? What are the threats?
What are the creative uses and innovative practices of conflict resolution?
How do youth fit into the field? The committee is also seeking proposals
that address such practical issues as how one develops a successful
conflict resolution practice.

Please note that the proposal submission deadline is today, October 1,
2002.

For more information, or to submit a proposal, go to:

================================================

ACR INTRODUCES NEW MEMBER SERVICES

ACR is delighted to announce that two new services are now available
exclusively to members of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR):
the Member Center and the ACR Member affinity credit card. ACR has designed
these valuable services to save you time and money, increase your access to
cutting-edge information, and connect you with your conflict resolution
peers.

As you know, ACR's Web site gives you access to resources that enable you
to improve your skills and keep up with the latest news and trends. With
the new Member Center, the much-anticipated members-only area of the Web
site, you can easily:

· Update your member contact information (as it will appear in the
Membership Directory) and renew your membership.
· Participate in discussion forums.
· Locate other members, including those in your professional interest
Section(s).

To access the Member Center, visit http://www.acresolution and click on
Member Center. Watch your mail for an envelope from ACR marked "Special
Message From Your New CEO." It contains your unique login name and
password for access to the Member Center.

When you log on to the Web site to access the Member Center, be sure to
look at the page on the ACR Annual Fund and how it advances the conflict
resolution field!

ACR has also launched the ACR Platinum Plus MasterCard, an exclusive
benefit for our valued members. This no-annual-fee credit card program
includes 24-hour customer service, worldwide acceptance, and superior
convenience. Plus, every time you use your ACR MasterCard, ACR receives an
automatic contribution at no additional cost to you. The card proudly
displays ACR's logo, which creates curiosity and helps start a discussion
about your line of work. To apply for the ACR MasterCard, call
1-800-GET-MBNA and use priority code SJ2H.

ACR is dedicated to providing you with outstanding member service, as well
as resources and opportunities that will strengthen your practice. At ACR,
we look forward to serving your needs for many years to come.

[3] ACR Publications Update
================================================

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: CONFLICT RESOLUTION QUARTERLY

Conflict Resolution Quarterly (CRQ), formerly Mediation Quarterly, ACR's
scholarly journal, publishes articles in the conflict management and
dispute resolution field in order to promote more effective professional
practice. The defining focus of the journal is the relationship between
theory, research and practice. We encourage CRQ readers to send feedback
about the journal to Tricia S. Jones, Editor-in-Chief, at
tsjones@astro.temple.edu.

In Issue 20:1, which members will receive this fall, CRQ brings you an
exciting colloquy on Emotion in Conflict. Dan Shapiro talks about the
importance of emotion in negotiation. Michael Evans and Marcia Tyler-Evans
address a rarely discussed topic -- how grief impacts conflict processes,
especially in mediation. And Lori Schreier reports some initial research on
how mediators view the importance of emotional intelligence and training on
emotional intelligence for their practice.

CRQ is also beginning two regular features in 20:1 -- Book Reviews and
Reader Responses. Don't miss Martin Remland's review of Barbara Madonik's
book "I hear what you say, but what are you telling me? The strategic use
of nonverbal communication in mediation." (San Francisco: Jossey Bass.) And
consider the insights in readers' responses to Irving and Benjamin's
article "Money and Mediation" (in the 18:4 issue of Mediation Quarterly).
If you are interested in submitting a book review or reader response and
want guidelines, please contact Tricia Jones at tsjones@astro.temple.edu,
or visit the call for proposals on the ACR Web site at
http://www.acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/CRQ-callforpapers.

CRQ will add a new feature with the 20:3 issue -- Research Matters. This
feature will present short summaries of research in the field (published in
other journals, book chapters, funders reports, or unpublished evaluation
reports) that have important practice implications for dispute resolution
professionals. If you have a suggestion for research that should be
described in this section, please send it to Tricia Jones at the e-mail
address noted above.

CALL FOR PHOTOS: ACRESOLUTION MAGAZINE HISTORY ISSUE

The Winter 2003 issue of ACResolution magazine will focus on the history of
the field of conflict resolution. We are seeking photos of "old timers" in
this field. Do you have any pictures from the early days of AFM, SPIDR or
CREnet? Any old snapshots that illustrate some aspect of our history? If
so, please send them to our managing editor, Mark Sawchuk, at
msawchuk@acresolution.org. Please include your name, contact information
(including e-mail) and regular mail address with your photos. All photos
will be credited and returned to the sender. Many thanks!

[4] ACR Annual Fund Appeal
================================================

JOIN THE ACR ANNUAL FUND AND HELP SUPPORT ACR

The Association for Conflict Resolution Annual Fund is a voluntary giving
program established by the Board of Directors. Tax-deductible donations are
used to enhance ACR's programs and services and help keep dues low. The
Annual Fund not only strengthens the operating capacity of the
organization, but also allows ACR to move forward with new initiatives to
enhance the practice and public understanding of conflict resolution.

The Fund offers four levels of giving:
Founders Circle $1000 -$10,000+
Sustaining Member $500+
Supporting Member $250+
Contributing Member $100+

ACR gratefully acknowledges contributions at any level of giving. All
contributors will be featured in ACResolution for one year (4 issues)
following the date of contribution. Most importantly, contributors will
know that they are making a real difference in the strength and
effectiveness of the Association for Conflict Resolution.

For more information on how you can help secure ACR's future, please
contact ACR COO Sangita Sigdyal at 202-667-9700.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ACR CHAPTERS

Are you interested in becoming involved with ACR in your geographic area?
ACR has dynamic regional Chapters, which provide members in common
geographical regions with a unique opportunity to meet face-to-face and
attend professional development programs and activities. In the Chapters,
conflict resolution professionals share ideas and best practices, and make
connections throughout their region.

For more information on joining ACR Chapters -- or starting one in your
area -- please contact Danette Ross, Membership Development Associate for
Chapters and Family Mediation, by e-mail at dross@acresolution.org or by
phone at 202-667-9700 ext. 227. Or visit our Web site:

[7] Quotes
================================================

Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has
ever borrowed largely for education. Probably, no nation is rich enough to
pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have
both.-- Abraham Flexner

Fall seven times, stand up eight. -- Japanese Proverb

Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your
temper or your self-confidence. -- Robert Frost

The willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life is the source
from which self-respect springs. -- Joan Didion

It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer. --
Albert Einstein

Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more
things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will
be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be
who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you
want. -- Margaret Young
