ACR STAFF UPDATE

Over the past three months the Board of Directors has met to revise the business plan for ACR. As most of you know, the Hewlett Foundation provided a generous grant that supported us through the merger process. The merger is now complete and the Board sought to plan the next steps in the evolution of ACR.

One of the outcomes of this planning is a staff reorganization plan intended to better align the needs of the organization with the staffing in the national office. As the start-up grant draws to a close, it is clear that the staff structure that worked for the newly formed ACR is not supported by our projected budget. After much discussion, the Board decided to eliminate some current staff positions, redefine the responsibilities of other positions, and create new positions.

ACR President Arnie Shienvold expressed his appreciation for the many contributions staff have made to ACR and his heartfelt concern for those whose positions were eliminated. He reiterated his strong support for the leadership of ACR's CEO, David Hart, and expressed his conviction that this step was needed to move ACR to a new level of efficiency and effectiveness. "We are now moving from the issues and start-up projects associated with merger and transition to an effective consolidation of resources to provide high quality service to our members and leadership to the field," he said.

For an up-to-date staff list, please visit our website at: http://acresolution.org/research.nsf/key/staff. We are confident that the new staff structure will not only continue to meet the needs of our members, but will also better serve ACR in its next phase of organizational development. Thank you for your ongoing support.

[2] Youth M-Power! Update
==========================

YOUTH M-POWER! UPDATE

Due to the staff restructuring noted above, ACR will no longer carry Youth M-Power as a special project. However, young people remain a vital part of ACR and its mission. ACR will continue its efforts to involve youth in ACR and support the work that they do in the field. Scholarships will be available to help youth attend the ACR annual conference and related workshops or conferences. There will be a number of activities for young people at the ACR conference in San Diego, including an orientation session and youth-focused workshops. Information about youth conferences, peer mediation, and other conflict resolution information for young people will be included on the ACR Web site.

ACR has established a youth committee to work on developing new ways to recruit youth members, encourage their interest in conflict resolution and support their efforts to resolve conflicts in their homes, schools and communities. We welcome any ideas and suggestions as well as any youth or adult members who wish to volunteer their time to work on the youth committee. If you would like more information, or would like to join the committee, please contact Lynne Hurdle-Price at lynnehurprice@webtv.net.

[6] ACR New York Chapter Update

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS IN GREATER NYC

The ACR Chapter of Greater New York (ACRGNY) will hold its 2002 Annual Conference, titled "ACR in Changing Times: Responding to World Events," on Friday, June 14 at Fordham University School of Law, located in Manhattan at 140 West 62nd Street. The keynote speaker is Peter H. Woodin, Esq., Deputy Special Master for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. There will be a presentation by ACR's CEO, David Hart, who will also confer the first ACRGNY "ADR Achievement Award" on Dean John D. Feerick, a world renowned mediator and negotiator, stepping down this month after ten years as Dean of Fordham Law School. In addition, there will be a wide assortment of plenary sessions and workshops, including an interactive program presented by Workplace Solutions titled: "From Crisis-Prone to Crisis-Prepared."

Also on the agenda is a presentation on the new "Small Business -- Court Assistance Project" beginning in Manhattan on June 4, 2002. Many business owners near Ground Zero have fallen behind on rent, leading landlords to commence eviction proceedings. This new court-sponsored program to assist small business owners who have suffered economic injury from the events of September 11 is intended to provide mediation services to facilitate settlement of these cases. ACRGNY is asking for volunteer mediators for this project, and a one-hour training workshop will be offered at the Conference for anyone interested in participating. For more information, contact Louise E. Dembeck at 212-581-5166.
