ACR

Public
Policy Efforts: ACR is shaping the
field in ways that protect integrity of practice
and make it welcoming to conflict resolvers from
many disciplines. These public
policy efforts involve:
-
tracking, informing members about, and shaping
legislative and public policy developments;
-
educating local, state, and federal leaders
about issues impacting conflict resolution
practitioners; and
-
building their support of the field.
One such effort is ACR’s work on the Uniform
Mediation Act (UMA). ACR’s
Official Observers were part of the legislative
drafting process and ACR members and leaders have
been tracking the UMA’s progress and educating
policymakers as the model law is considered for
adoption at the state level.
Quality
Assurance Initiatives: ACR's Quality
Assurance initiatives are collaborative efforts
that bring together ACR members and other leaders
in the field to set standards of practice, educate
practitioners and the public about the ethical
obligations of conflict resolvers, and explore
ways to enhance the field, including considering
the possible creation of a voluntary certification
process that would provide uniform standards for
mediator certification across the country.
Through
these initiatives, ACR is shaping the field according
to our core values.
Public
Education efforts include outreach to
inform the general public about the benefits of
conflict resolution and how to access providers
and resources.
As part of its outreach, ACR has designated
the third Thursday
of every October
as Conflict
Resolution Day and is coordinating
its efforts with other national conflict resolution
organizations and local, state and international
groups to build interest in working together to
increase public awareness of the field.
ACR-approved
Training Courses meet standards for
competent training in the core area of family
and divorce mediation. Anyone interested in training
can access the ACR website to view a
list of approved programs that are recognized
by ACR.
These and other activities to lead the field
are carried out not only by ACR’s Board
of Directors and staff
members, but also by an extensive structure
of committees
and task
forces that allow our members to
take an active part in shaping the organization’s
work. This highly participatory structure ensures
that these efforts respond to the real needs of
members to build their skills and their careers.
