Canada
The Office
of Conflict Resolution in Agriculture and Agri-Food
Canada, a Canadian government department offered
ADR services to its employees.
For
Conflict Resolution Day, they set up booths to
provide information about their conflict
resolution services in two of their department
buildings. Employees were invited to come meet and
chat and were also provided pamphlets, information
packages and stress balls.
Portugal
Lisbon, Portugal
MEDIARCOM hosted an event in Lisbon, Portugal, on
the afternoon of October 20th from 2:00 p.m. to
6:00 p.m. It consisted of two round tables, a
media conference to divulge MEDIARCOM and a
closing statement by the Secretary of State for
Justice of Portugal.
The
round tables included Founder members and guests
on two topics:

United States
Alabama
Proclamation
by Alabama state Governor declaring October 20 as
Mediation Day.
The state office of dispute
resolution (Alabama Center for Dispute Resolution)
under the Alabama Supreme Court Commission on
Dispute Resolution, the Supreme Court of Alabama
and the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals sent
certificates of appreciation to all mediators
registered on the State Court Mediator Roster.
California
The Ventura
Center for Dispute Settlement of Ventura County
promoted October 20, 2005 as National Conflict
Resolution Day. The Center chose to honor Nina R.
Meierding, Esq. as Mediator of the Year and Judge
David W. Long, Ventura Superior Court for his
outstanding contributions and support for
mediation awareness in the community. The guest
speaker was Justice Richard D. Aldrich from the
Court of Appeal, 2nd District, Division
Three in Los Angeles, California. Justice Aldrich
is credited with initiating the Ventura County
Superior Courts Mediation Program.

Colorado
Mary Zinn,
President of Zinn Mediation Associates in
Evergreen, Colorado promoted Conflict Resolution
Day by collaborating with
Steve Charbonneau of Community Mediation Concepts
and Ron Ludwig with The Conflict Center. In
Denver, an hour long radio program on KGNU, 1390
AM in Denver, and in 88.5 FM in Boulder, CO,
broadcast interviews and took calls on conflict
resolution on October 20 for their METRO show.
The University
of Denver’s Conflict Resolution Institute’s
student group, Society for Conflict Resolution
(SCORE), promoted conflict resolution education on
campus. Students posted conflict resolution
posters around campus and distributed buttons and
magnets. That evening, SCORE hosted a dialogue on
civil rights following the event “Fifty
Years On:
Commemorating the Montgomery Bus Boycott.” For

Florida
Proclamation from the
Governor of Florida proclaiming October 16 – 23 as
Mediation Week in Florida – events were planned
for Tallahassee, Tampa, Orlando, Miami and many
more places in between.
Proclamation from the
Board of County Commissioners in Manatee County,
Florida, that the week of October 16-22 be
declared as Mediation Week.
The
Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners
proclaimed that October 16-22, 2005, be recognized
as MEDIATION WEEK IN PINELLAS COUNTY,
extending greetings and best wishes to all
celebrating this occasion; and encouraging all
individuals, schools, courts, businesses, local
communities, and the news media to commemorate the
important role of mediation in our society.
Events include:

The Eleventh Judicial Circuit Mediation Division
produced a presentation, a spin-off of the TV
program Family Feud, which invited staff and
guests to play a round in an educational and fun
game about Mediation and how it serves the needs
of the parties. The Fair took place on Friday,
October 21, 2005 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the
Courthouse Center, 11th Floor
conference room, 175 NW 1st Avenue, Miami,
Florida 33128.

A special day for
peer mediators at Florida State University was
held where students attended sessions to further
their skills. The program began by a welcome
from the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme
Court with activities prominently featured on
the Supreme Court’s website.

A reception was held on October 19th
5:30 p.m., at The Florida State University
College of Law rotunda in celebration of FSU
Mediation Day and the First National Conflict
Resolution Day. Hors d'oeuvres and other light
refreshments were served.

The 9th Judicial Circuit Court of
Florida held their Annual Mediation Day in the
Orange County Courthouse Jury Room on October
21. It featured food, games, fun and info on
mediation.
Georgia
Governor Sonny
Perdue Declared October 16-22 Conflict Resolution
Week in Georgia! Governor Perdue granted ACR-GA
an official proclamation declaring October
16-22 Conflict Resolution Week. Visit

Hawaii
Hawaii held
statewide discussions on mediation confidentiality
and the Uniform Mediation Act. Judge Michael
Getty was the speaker. There was also an ADR Week
Ceremony in which Judge Wayne Brazil was the
keynote speaker. Awards were presented to
elementary students for the “Posters for Peace”
contest.
Hawaii also participated in a
Proclamation signing. Mayor of the City
and County of Honolulu. City Hall
On
October 21, “You and the Law” cable television
program
aired.
The topic was ADR.
Illinois
ACR'S Chicago
Chapter proudly presented a presentation by Judge
Geraldine Brown and Judge Sidney Schenkier of the
United States District Court of the Northern
District of Illinois. They shared their insights
on “Getting to Resolution: What private dispute
resolvers can learn from pre-trial settlement
conference” on October 20, 2005.

Kentucky
The
Governor of Kentucky signed a proclamation
declaring October 20th as Conflict
Resolution Day!
John D.
Willis, Director of the Graduate Studies in
Dispute Resolution at Sullivan University, created
a list of what individuals could do to recognize
and celebrate Conflict Resolution Day. Some of
the activities suggested were:

apologize for
what you did
·
forgive, accept an apology and move on
·
stop negativity or gossip all day
·
cancel a debt for someone who can't pay
·
analyze why you are angry and get control
of it
·
tell the truth all day
·
send an email of appreciation to someone
who will be surprised
·
lead your group in the right direction, all
day
·
present a workable solution to the group
that shows goodwill
·
sit with a lonely person and listen
carefully to them
The
Secretary of State from Kentucky sent out a global
email to all employees of the Kentucky state
government, which mentioned Conflict Resolution
Day and urged employees to participate in the
activities suggested by John Willis (above).
Sullivan University invited people to participate
in an online forum created to celebrate Conflict
Resolution Day.

Maine
Governor
John E. Baldacci of Maine has proclaimed
October 20 as ADR Day.
Maine
Association of Dispute Resolution Professionals,
(MADRP) used this opportunity to raise awareness
of mediation throughout the state, including two
radio programs and a seminar at a local college.

Maryland
The
Governor of Maryland issued a proclamation
declaring October 20, 2005 Maryland Conflict
Resolution Day.
The
Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office
held its first National Conflict Resolution Day
Student Art Contest. The contest was open to all
Maryland public school students in grades K
through 12. Art will be displayed at the Maryland
Court of Appeals Building in Annapolis from
October 20th (Conflict Resolution Day)
through December 2nd. Winners will
have the opportunity to be photographed with the
Honorable Robert M. Bell, Chief Judge of the
Maryland Court of Appeals.
On
October 20th, the Maryland Mediation and Conflict
Resolution Office officially unveiled their series
of "Mediation: It's Your Solution" posters. They
will be on display at the Maryland Court of
Appeals Building from October 20 to December 2nd.

Massachusetts
South
Boston High School celebrated the completion of
basic training for this year's new peer
mediators. In attendance were fellow experienced
mediators, program coordinators, administrators,
and representatives of the Attorney General's
office and local press who enjoyed the
festivities, cake and good cheer.
Peer
Mediation programs across the Boston Public School
system heightened awareness of the programs and
services available to fellow students, faculty and
families. Posters adorned hallways and
announcements were made throughout the day
encouraging students to seek out peer
mediators, who wore badges for identification, as
a source of information.
Metropolitan Mediation Services and the Office of
the Attorney General currently oversea five

Nebraska
Conflict Coaching Kick-Off and Pizza Party was an
event sponsored by the School of Communication at
the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the Boys
and Girls club of Omaha. The event was a kick-off
for a four-week service-learning project in
“conflict coaching”, in which university students
in an Interpersonal Conflict class at the
University of Nebraska at Omaha were paired with
members of Boys and Girls Club of Omaha for a
series of conflict coaching sessions. The
Kick-Off was held at the North Omaha Club. At
this event, university students gave a
presentation about conflict and Conflict Coaching,
and facilitated small group discussions with Club
members.
New Mexico
The U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission Phoenix District Office and
The University of New Mexico Office of Equal
Opportunity sponsored a Mediation Seminar in
Albuquerque, NM on October 20 as part of the
Conflict Resolution Day initiative.
New York
On October 20, 2005, the Association of the Bar of
the City of New York, together with courts, law
schools, government agencies, bar associations,
community organizations, and securities industry
self-regulatory organizations, again sponsored the
fifth annual Mediation Settlement Day in New York.
Participating organizations, including the New
York State Unified Court System, NASD, and New
York City’s Office of Administrative Trials and
Hearings (OATH), geared up towards Mediation
Settlement Day and by planning seminars and
panels, which highlighted how mediation can help
effectively resolve disputes.

Ken
Feinberg addressed ADR practitioners and consumers
at the Mediation Settlement Day Kickoff event at
the City Bar. Ken was the Special Master for the
9/11 Victims Fund and he has written about his
experience in a new book, What is Life Worth?

Environment and Public Policy Section Co-Chair
John Stephens conducted a training on October 20th
and made special note of the day.
Ohio
ACR President-Elect Terry Wheeler conducted
training on October 20th and made a special
recognition of Conflict Resolution Day.
Oregon
East Metro Mediation of
Gresham, Oregon, held two workshops at local
libraries.
"I'm Mad, I'm Sad, I'm Glad"
was an opportunity for children to explore their
emotions, which are key to peaceful conflict
resolution. Children aged three to seven were
invited for storytelling and mask making to learn
about expressing emotions in a healthy and
positive way.
"Conflict Styles and Conflict
Resolution" teaches adults the five styles of
handling conflict, and when each style works best.
East Metro Mediation instructors helped identify
natural styles, and introduced other styles.
On October 18, 2005, at
5:30pm Clackamas County Family Court Services
hosted
A New Kind of Fair E tail- A Conflict Resolution
Workshop.
Fairy tales have been around since the turn of the
17th century..., which translates into
a long, long, long time ago and while they are
entertaining, they are also embedded with the
stereotypes, prejudices and oppressive behavior we
have been working to end since...well probably the
17th century. Happily, today we have
an opportunity to confront these judgmental
attitudes and story plots through this conflict
resolution workshop. Youth and adults were welcome

Announcement of Shannon Stewart Scholarship to

Pennsylvania
The Philadelphia City
Council proclaimed October 21 as Conflict
Resolution Day in Philadelphia -- this was a joint
effort between Good Shepherd Mediation Program and
the Delaware Valley Chapter of ACR. Jim
Rosenstein, president of the Delaware Valley
Chapter of ACR and Cheryl Cutrona, Executive
Director of Good Shepherd Mediation Program,
received the Proclamation at 9:30 a.m. October 21
at City Hall.

Mediation Program Board of Directors passed a
Board Resolution supporting Conflict Resolution
Day.
Good Shepherd Mediation
Program commenced a three-day Basic Mediation
Training on October 21, 2005.

Tennessee
There has been
a Gubernatorial
proclamation
by Governor Phil Bredesen of October 20, 2005 as
Mediation Day. The state of Tennessee recognized
the progress of mediation in the state and
recognized the Victim Offender Reconciliation
Programs in particular.
Texas
The Houston
Chapter of ACR planned a special program on
workplace conflict resolution "Respect in the
Workplace" for October 20. ACR members and
members of the Labor and Employment Relations
Association were involved.
Virginia
The Community
Mediation Center of Norfolk, VA planned a "Mock
Trial" to celebrate Conflict Resolution Day.
Staff and volunteers presented cases as if they
were to happen in court. Then presented the same
case, and resolved the issues using mediation.
This event allowed the students to realize the
difference between court and mediation and the
benefits associated with using mediation.
Washington
Clark County
The City of
Vancouver and Clark County, Washington,
have officially
proclaimed October as Conflict Resolution
Month. Community
Mediation Services worked with community partners
to provide a series of events and activities
The coalition

City of Seattle
The mayor of Seattle, Greg J
Nickels, issued a proclamation declaring
October 20, 2005 to be Conflict Resolution day in
Seattle and encouraged citizens to observe this
day by learning more about collaborative conflict
resolution.
Conflict resolution
practitioners throughout the City are pleased to
have a Mayor who truly understands the benefits of
ADR. Seattle is one of the few Cities that has an
ADR program for its own employees embedded within
the City government.
The City of Seattle's
Alternative Dispute Resolution Program celebrated
Conflict Resolution Day by publicizing the day,
having an open house, showing videos and providing
conflict resolution resources throughout the day
for City of Seattle employees.

hosted a discussion for area students on the topic
of “How to get into the field of conflict
resolution”. Local professionals in the field led
the discussion which was held from 1:30 p.m. to
3:30 p.m. on October 20 at ACR’s office, 1015 18th
St. NW, Suite 1150, Washington, D.C.
World Bank
ACR Board
Director Anne B. Thomas requested Conflict
Resolution Day be announced in the World Bank
internal newspaper on October 20. The Bank
recently hosted an event with dispute resolution
colleagues in other international organizations
and Anne sent them information on Conflict
Resolution Day with a request that they promote
the day within their institutions.

Wisconsin
Association of Mediators held their Conflict
Resolution celebration on October 20
Wikis Web Page Created for CR Day
A wiki web page was created
about the conflict resolution day event. It
encouraged teachers, as well as people from peace
valuing churches, synagogues, temples and civic
groups to read and contribute. Wikis are web pages
that can be read and
EDITED by anyone on the
internet thus, they can serve as a free exchange
of community developed knowledge about this event.
