Conflict Resolution Day 2009

Conflict Resolution Day 2009 was celebrated around the world on October 15. Inspired by ACR’s Board Resolution proclaiming every third Thursday in October for an annual celebration of Conflict Resolution Day, 11 states in the United States, 7 countries (Canada, France, Australia, Nigeria, India, Bangladesh and Portugal), and various national organizations held events on or around October 15. Read more about this year’s highlights at http://www.acrnet.org/crday/index.htm.

ACR held a poetry contest and a video contest to celebrate Conflict Resolution Day 2009. Poetry contest winners, as well as second place winners and honorable mentions, can be viewed here. The first honorable mention in the video contest goes to Meggan Jacobs for her video, “Conflict DONE,” which can be viewed here. The second honorable mention goes to Nora Lee Urbanski for her video, “Race You for It,” which can be viewed here.

More than 50 events to celebrate Conflict Resolution Day have been posted on ACR's Web site. Details about events are still coming in. If you held an event that is not currently listed, please fill out this form. If you have a proclamation to share, please submit this form.

This year, groups partnered with book stores, universities, religious organizations, the Better Business Bureau, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, state lawmakers and others. Proclamations were obtained from mayors and governors.

Conflict Resolution Day 2010 will take place on October 21, and it is never too early to start planning your event! Please visit the ACR Conflict Resolution Day website at: www.ACRnet.org/crday for ideas. In addition to descriptions of all events held the last four years, you can download a Conflict Resolution Day poster which is now available in six languages (Arabic, English, French, Hebrew, Japanese, and Spanish). We are interested in offering the posters in additional languages, so if you can assist us in translating, please let us know. The website also includes tips on setting up a program, a sample letter that can be used to request a proclamation, and many proclamations from various jurisdictions.

Get involved. The first year, start small, but just like the tree which is the symbol of Conflict Resolution Day, the seeds you plant one year, will continue to grow and blossom each year.

Conflict Resolution Day was conceived in 2005 by ACR to:

  • Promote awareness of mediation, arbitration, conciliation and other creative, peaceful means of resolving conflict;
  • Promote the use of conflict resolution in schools, families, businesses, communities, governments and the legal system;
  • Recognize the significant contributions of (peaceful) conflict resolvers; and
  • Obtain national synergy by having celebrations happen across the country and around the world on the same day.

History

In 2005, in order to increase public awareness about conflict resolution and its many benefits, ACR’s Board of Directors adopted a resolution designating October 20, 2005 as Conflict Resolution Day. ACR coordinated its efforts with other conflict resolution organizations and reached out to local, state and international groups to build interest in holding local celebrations in conjunction with Conflict Resolution Day. Events were held in Canada, Portugal, and 22 U.S. states. Also in the United States, a number of counties, cities and states adopted proclamations designating day- or week-long conflict resolution celebrations.

In March 2006, ACR’s Board of Directors adopted a resolution designating the third Thursday in October as Conflict Resolution Day. Going forward, Conflict Resolution Day will always be held on the third Thursday of October. This year the event will be on October 15, 2009. To read the resolution, click here.
