Other Key Information

2004 Conference Features:

World Café: Conflict Resolution at the Crossroads

The World Café will take place on Thursday from noon until 2:15 p.m. (lunch will be provided). World Café Conversations are an intentional way to create a living network of conversation around questions that matter. A Café Conversation is a collaborative, group dialogue process for sharing knowledge and creating possibilities for action.

Join us for an interactive World Café discussion on the evolution of the conflict resolution field and the role of the practitioner in that evolution. Panelists offer insights on the following questions:

  • What evolution of the conflict resolution practice will enable our field to contribute more effectively to resolving the intractable issues facing individuals and society?

  • How can our practice contribute to creating a more participatory, civil society?

Following the panel discussion, conference participants will join roundtable discussions to consider their own perspectives and offer ideas to move forward.

World Café Methodology: Participants sit at tables and have a series of conversational rounds, lasting from 20 to 45 minutes, about a question which is personally meaningful to them. At the end of each round, one person remains as the host for the next round and the other three participants travel to separate tables. The host welcomes the next group and shares the essence of the previous conversation, then the newcomers relate the conversations they bring, and the conversation deepens. At the end of the second round participants may return to their original tables or move to yet another table, depending on the Café’s design. Likewise, they may engage a new question or continue to explore the original one. After two, or preferably three rounds, each table reports its themes, insights, and learnings to the entire group. This information is synthesized, and at this point the Café may end or it may begin another round of conversational exploration and inquiry.

Facilitated Discussions On Racism, Conflict And Conflict Resolution

The facilitated discussions will take place on Friday afternoon from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. They are designed to provide a space for open dialogue through participatory discussions about issues related to racism. The facilitated discussions are held without competing programming so that attendees can focus on how this issue relates to our field. ACR has adopted this valued tradition to direct attention to this important issue. Racism creates systemic and individual privilege, discrimination, and significant conflict in the lives of people around the world. Please join us for a rich and challenging discussion with your friends and colleagues in the field.

Conference Scholarships and Discounts

ACR offers two types of conference attendance scholarships to its members:

Financial Aid Scholarships
Twenty-five financial aid scholarships are available to ACR members who need financial support in order to attend the 2004 annual conference. These scholarships cover one half of the early bird conference registration fee of $340. Financial aid scholarships are for ACR members who are active in the field of dispute resolution as practitioners or conflict resolution educators, but lack the personal financial resources, and/or employer sponsorship, to attend the annual conference. If you are interested in applying for an ACR conference scholarship for the 2004 conference in Sacramento, please contact ACR by e-mail at conferences@ACRnet.org or call 202-464-9700, ext. 210. The application deadline is August 9, 2004. Applicants selected to receive a scholarship will be notified by August 20, 2004.

Chapter Scholarships
Each ACR Chapter may award one Chapter Scholarship to a member in good standing. This member must also be a member of ACR. ACR will contribute 50 percent of the early bird conference registration fee, and the Chapter awarding the scholarship will cover the remaining 50 percent. Each Chapter determines its own criteria for awarding the Chapter Scholarship. If you are interested, please contact your local Chapter President. Please note that the Chapter portion of the fee must accompany the registration form.

Volunteer Mediators Discount
A 30 percent reduction in the regular conference registration fee is offered to ACR members who work as volunteer mediators or provide other voluntary support to community-based programs. This offer will be done on a first-come, first-served basis at the time of registration and is only available to the first 100 volunteer mediators/staff who apply. Proper verification includes providing a letter of certification from your supervisor that establishes your status as volunteer mediator/staff and confirms that this discount will make your attendance possible. This letter must accompany your registration form in order to qualify for the discount. The discount does not apply to pre-conference sessions or to the student, youth, youth chaperone, exhibitor or daily registration rates.
