2003 ACR Annual Conference
Closing Keynote by former Senator George
J. Mitchell
ACR
is pleased to announce that this year's keynote
address will be delivered on Saturday, October
18th, by former Senator George Mitchell. Senator
Mitchell (D-Maine) served as Majority Leader of
the U.S. Senate from 1985-95. In the mid 1990s,
he led the Clinton Administration's successful
negotiations to achieve a peaceful political settlement
in Northern Ireland and was nominated for the
1998 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in this effort.
He currently chairs the Ethics Committee of the
U.S. Olympic Committee, serves on the National
Healthcare Commission and the International Crisis
Group, and is co-chairman of the national commission
investigating the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Mitchell's early experience as a lawyer and judge,
followed by his long and successful career in
national and international diplomacy, make him
a particularly appropriate speaker for an audience
of conflict resolvers.
His speech "Can Conflict Resolution
Make a Difference? Reflections of a Career Peacemaker"
will take place on Saturday at the Keynote Luncheon.
