The
Association for Conflict Resolution in partnership
with the United States Institute of Peace and the Institute
for Conflict Analysis and Resolution is hosting a
national teleconference on Conflict Resolution Day,
October 16, 5-6:15 p.m. EDT. The teleconference,
which is geared to practitioners, will focus on
Conflict Resolution, Democracy, and Policymaking:
Lessons and Challenges.

Members of the panel include:
Sharon Press is the Director of the Florida
Dispute Resolution Center, a joint program of the
Florida Supreme Court and FSU College of Law and is
responsible for the ADR programs for the state
courts. She was the inspiration for ACR’s creation
of Conflict Resolution Day and has served as the
chair for ACR’s Conflict Resolution Day programming.
Press will serve as moderator for the call.
Nabil Al-Tikriti, University of Mary Washington,
Fredericksburg, VA
Nabil Al-Tikriti studies
population displacement in Iraq and its neighbors.
He also has served as a field administrator and
election monitor in various programs in the Middle
East, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Africa. His
numerous awards include two Fulbright grants as well
as research support from the University of Chicago
and the University of Mary Washington. Al-Tikriti
holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern languages and
civilizations from the University of Chicago. He is
a former senior fellow at the United States
Institute of Peace..
Wendy Greene is Managing Director of The Peace
Alliance, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that
empowers civic activism for a culture of peace and
leads the U.S. Department of Peace Campaign. A
graduate of UCLA and an “Air Force Brat,” Greene’s
diverse career has included leadership positions
primarily in corporate communications and management
in the aerospace, entertainment, and youth
empowerment industries.
Bernie Mayer, Creighton University, Omaha, NE
Bernard Mayer, Ph.D., Professor
of Conflict Resolution at the Werner Institute for
Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at Creighton
University and a partner at CDR Associates. Since
the 1970s, Mayer has worked as a mediator, trainer,
researcher, dispute system designer and program
administrator. A past ACR board member, Mayer is a
widely published author. His books include The
Dynamics of Conflict Resolution ( 2000), Beyond
Neutrality (2004), and Staying With Conflict
(forthcoming, 2009)
Lisa
Schirch, 3D Security Initiative, Eastern
Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA
Dr.
Schirch is a former Fulbright Fellow in East and
West Africa, Schirch has worked in over 20 countries
with communities and government leaders to build
peace and security. Her focus as founder and
director of the
3D Security Initiative is to help make the
links between community level peacebuilding work
with think tanks, Members of Congress, State
Department, Department of Defense, USAID, and others
that shape U.S. foreign policy. Her current work
explores the intersection of conflict prevention and
climate change; US Africa Command (AFRICOM), and
U.S. policies on Iran, Iraq, and border security.
She is the author of 5 books on peacebuilding and
conflict prevention.
About Conflict Resolution Day
The Association for Conflict
Resolution (ACR)’s Board of Directors adopted a
resolution designating the third Thursday in October
annually as Conflict Resolution Day in order to
increase public awareness about conflict resolution
and its many benefits. As part of this recognition
effort, ACR has coordinates its efforts with other
conflict resolution organizations and reaches out to
local, state and international groups to build
interest in holding local celebrations in
conjunction with Conflict Resolution Day.
