Austin,
TX – Alice Shorett has been awarded the Sharon M.
Pickett Award by the Association for Conflict
Resolution. Shorett was presented the award for
having advanced the cause of environmental
protection through the effective use of alternative
dispute resolution.
Shorett
has provided mediation and facilitation services
throughout the United States and Canada for more
than 30 years. She founded Triangle Associates, a
public policy dispute resolution firm, in Seattle in
1979 and is a pioneer in the field of environmental
and public policy mediation. Her early work included
the successful negotiation of the Snohomish River
Basin Agreement – the first case in which
environmental mediation principles were applied in
the United States.
Shorett coauthored
Negotiating Settlements, a Guide to Environmental
Mediation (American Arbitration
Association). She is featured in Public Dispute
Mediators: Profiles of 15 Distinguished Careers
(Harvard Law School, Program on Negotiation). She is
on the national conflict resolution rosters for the
US Environmental Protection Agency and US Institute
for Environmental Conflict Resolution, and is on
state mediation rosters in Washington and
Oregon. She also belongs to the Native Dispute
Resolution Network administered by the US Institute
for Environmental Conflict Resolution and is a
member of the Association for Conflict Resolution
and Dispute Resolution section of the American Bar
Association.
In presenting the award,
ACR Board member Lou Gieszl said, “Perhaps most
noteworthy, Alice has a proven track record of
taking complex litigated cases and using joint
education, rebuilding relationships, and creating
net environmental gains. The legacy of her work
extends beyond conflict resolution and into the
realm of environmental preservation and
restoration.”
The Sharon M. Pickett award was established in honor
of Sharon Pickett who served as Editor of the
Association for Conflict Resolution’s quarterly
magazine ACResolution from 2000 – 2007. In
addition to serving as a family mediator and
trainer, Pickett worked for many environmental NGOs
and was an ardent advocate for environmental issues.
Sharon Pickett passed
away in August 2008. Tributes to her can be read at
