Association for Conflict Resolution Appoints David Hart as New CEO

Washington, D.C. -- The Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) is pleased to announce the appointment of David A. Hart as the organization's new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Hart succeeds Daniel Bowling, the former CEO of ACR, who will assume a new position as Executive Director of Duke University Law School's Private Adjudication Center and teach conflict resolution and related courses at the law school.

David Hart brings extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution to his new role with ACR. He is the former director of the Americans with Disabilities Act Mediation Program, a national mediation program funded by the U.S. Dept. of Justice and administered through the Key Bridge Foundation in Washington, D.C. David has served as Executive Director of local, state, and national nonprofit organizations and has worked on a variety of projects for the United States Institute of Peace. He holds a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from Oberlin College, a Master's Degree in Political Science from Syracuse University's Maxwell School, and has earned Certificates of Achievement from the Program on the Analysis and Resolution of Conflict (PARC), and the Institute on Creative Conflict Management.

"The entire ACR board joins me in heartily welcoming David Hart to this new position," said Arnie Shienvold, President of ACR. "In David, we have found both a dedicated conflict resolver and an experienced executive. I'm sure that our members will be well served under his leadership."

The announcement of David's appointment was made at the recent ACR annual conference held Oct. 10-13 in Toronto. Almost 1500 people representing 15 countries attended the event and welcomed David to his new post. The event also included many special tributes and heartfelt expressions of gratitude to the outgoing CEO, Daniel Bowling. Daniel served as the Executive Director of the Society of Professional in Dispute Resolution for three years and as CEO of the Association for Conflict Resolution since its inception in January 2001.

"ACR is in now a position to have a major impact on the field of conflict resolution," said Bowling. "I wish David and everyone in the organization every success in building on the firm foundation we have laid together. I am honored to have served ACR and SPIDR and look forward to the 2002 ACR annual conference in San Diego!"

David Hart expressed his enthusiasm for ACR and the challenges ahead. "I am thrilled to join ACR," he said. "At this particular time in history, our work is needed more than ever. I believe ACR is on the brink of substantial growth in membership and clout. The Board of Directors, staff, and members are all ready to contribute their vast knowledge of conflict resolution and their boundless energy to helping ACR achieve its enormous potential. I am lucky to be a part of this important endeavor."
