Washington, D.C. The Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) will hold its

9th Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA, October 7-10, 2009. Keynote speaker Dr. Wallace Warfield will challenge conflict resolution practitioners to consider whether the knowledge, skills and abilities used in the past to resolve conflicts are adaptable to the complex and protracted conflicts of today or whether new approaches and identities should be developed. Following his keynote address, Dr. Warfield will participate in a roundtable discussion with panelists Robert Benjamin, Homer C. LaRue and Dr. Joyce Neu. The panelists will discuss conflict resolution in the 21st century, the roles of conflict resolution practitioners, and how disputes are being addressed.

Dr. Warfield has a background in conflict resolution that stretches over four decades, not only serving as a mediator and conciliator in various conflict situations, but also developing theory and training for members of the legal profession and federal government.

Warfield, an associate professor of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR) at George Mason University, is a reflective practitioner, trained in the disciplines of public administration and public policy.

Robert Benjamin has worked in conflict resolution within the context of business/civil, family/divorce, employment and healthcare disputes. Benjamin, trained as a lawyer and social worker, is a past president of the Academy of Family Mediators and has authored book contributions and articles on mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution.

Homer C. LaRue, a professor of law at Howard University, teaches lawyering skills, civil procedure, professional responsibility and dispute resolution. Among the founding faculty at the City University of New York School of Law, LaRue has extensive experience in mediation and arbitration service, developing programs to help racial minorities become mediators and arbitrators in labor and non-labor disputes.

Dr. Joyce Neu is team leader of United Nations Standby Team of Mediation Experts, assisting peace processes. She has worked as a practitioner and scholar in international mediation and negotiation in diverse conflict zones. Dr. Neu has conducted conflict assessments in Albania, Georgia, Latvia, Macedonia, Madagascar and Moldova, and helped facilitate talks between conflicting parties in Bosnia, Congo, Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mali, Sudan and Uganda.
