2003 Award Recipients
Senator George Mitchell received
the ACR Peacemaker Award in recognition of his
distinguished career as a U.S. Senator, diplomat
and peacemaker. Senator Mitchell led the Clinton
Administration’s successful negotiations
to achieve a peaceful political settlement in
Northern Ireland and was nominated for the 1998
Nobel Peace Prize for his role in that effort.
Dr. Barbara Landau received
the John M. Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award
for her far-reaching academic, professional and
humanistic contributions to the field of mediation.
Dr. Landau is a mediator, psychologist and lawyer
in Toronto, Canada.
Harry Lee Anstead, Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court of Florida, accepted the 2003 ACR Presidential
Award on behalf of the Supreme Court of
Florida. ACR honored the Supreme Court
for its significant role in the development and
promotion of alternative dispute resolution in
the courts.
Sharon Press received the ACR
Presidential Award for her outstanding work on
behalf of Alternative Dispute Resolution and for
her unflagging service to the Association for
Conflict Resolution. Ms. Press is Director of
the Dispute Resolution Center in Tallahassee,
Florida, and a former member of the ACR Board
of Directors.
Chris Carlson received the Mary
Parker Follett Award for her leadership in helping
to establish state offices of dispute resolution
and for her work in helping to create the National
Policy Consensus, a new partnership between the
Policy Consensus Initiative (PCI), and Portland
State University. Ms. Carlson is Executive Director
of the Policy Consensus Initiative in Portland,
Oregon.
The annual James Boskey Dispute Resolution Essay
Competition is jointly administered by ACR and
the American Bar Association Section on Dispute
Resolution (ABA-DRS). Henry M. Abromson,
of Marquette University Law School, was this year’s
winner in the Law School Division. He received
the award at the conference for his essay “The
Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy:
Will Alternative Dispute Resolution Succeed Where
the Courts Have Not: A Proposed Solution to an
Imperfect System.”
Heidi Marie Tauscher, of Emory
University’s Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences, won the James Boskey Dispute Resolution
Essay Competition in the Graduate Student Division
for her essay “Spiritual Practices for Mediation
Challenges: Pragmatic Mediation Approaches from
the Five Major World Religious Traditions.”
She will receive the award at the ABA-DRS’s
annual conference next spring.
The Association for Conflict Resolution
received the 2003 ADR Institution Award of Excellence
from the American College of Civil Trial Mediators
(ACCTM). ACR was honored for its efforts to enhance
the practice and public understanding of conflict
resolution in the U.S. and around the world. David
Hart, ACR’s Chief Executive Officer, accepted
the award on behalf of ACR.
